‘Larger than life.’

The NYC Basketball Hall of Fame is shocked and grieved by the sudden and untimely passing of former New York Knicks first round draft pick Mike Sweetney.

Michael "Mike" Sweetney was only 43 years old.

The 6-foot-8 power forward, a DC native, starred for Georgetown from 2000 to 2003, averaging 18.2 points per game during his three-year college career.

The Knicks selected Sweetney with the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, a class that included Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Sweetney spent two seasons with the Knicks before playing two seasons with the Chicago Bulls. He later continued his professional career internationally.

Most recently Mike Sweetney was an assistant coach at Yeshiva University and just last month was appointed head coach at a prominent private high school in New Jersey.

Big Mike was a huge supporter of the hoopshallny.org and over the summer was mulling the possibility of joining the Hall's Board of Trustees.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our prayers are with his wife of 20 years India and their wonderful children.
