"It would have involved chance and we placed the safety of the passengers above all."
May 29, 1971, Pan American World Airways Flight 442 en route to Miami from Buenos Aires and Caracas carried 60 passengers, and a crew of nine. One passenger used a stolen ticket to board, and his intended destination was Havana, Cuba. He hijacked the Boeing 707 by taking a female hostage at knifepoint.
After landing in Cuba, political delays caused the crew and passengers to have an unscheduled four day visit and local tour of Havana, all under constant guard.
On June 2, the aircraft with all its crew and passengers, less the hijacker, safely landed in Miami. In response to questions at the press conference as to why no one tried to overcome the hijacker, Captain George Ashley's reply is above.

At the 38 minute mark, watch as 20/20 and ABC News Live win a 2026 News & Documentary Emmy Award for their piece on Operation Babylift : The 50 Year Journey”!

To have Pan Am Museum and our chair Linda thanked by name is more than we ever expected. We exist to share the history of Pan American World Airways, but it is the human stories in that history that make the impact.

Congratulations ABC 20/20 and ABC News Live !

"Pan Am Clippers At War"

The first minute acknowledges the 200 Pan American Airways employees who gave their lives protecting the Pacific Island airport bases as the Japanese attacked, acknowledges those employees taken prisoner, and acknowledges all those who served.

On this Memorial Day we invite you to view this 45 minute film on Pan American World Airways' early history and the company’s role and involvement in WWII.

For Memorial Day 💐

Memorial Day, a day set aside for remembering all those who have lost their lives in the line of duty serving in the United States Armed Forces.

We at Pan Am Museum also recognize the sacrifice of Pan Am employees, family and friends: those who served during WWII, those taken prisoner during WWII, those who the built airports and airfields during WWII, those who served during all conflicts around the world, those who maintained the aircraft, flew the aircraft, and those who volunteered their service for all R&R Flights. We know we failed to mention everyone, but we do not forget. This is part of our current exhibit at the Pan Am Museum.
