WHAT YOU WILL NEED (adult supervision needed):
A penny, dropper/pipette, glass of water, soap, tray/plate, paper towel

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Guess how many water drops you can fit on the front of a penny.
2. Using your pipette/dropper, slowly add drops of water to the face of your penny without spilling water off the sides. Don’t forget to count the drops!
3. Once the water spills over the sides, stop counting.
4. Add a tablespoon of dish soap to your glass of water. Stir gently, don’t make too many bubbles.
5. How many soapy drops can you fit on the front of a penny now?

What’s the science?
It’s all about gravity, cohesion, and adhesion. Gravity is what flattens the droplets, cohesion is what holds the droplets together, and adhesion holds the drops on the surface of the coin. If you look at your droplets with a magnifying glass, you’ll see that they start to form a dome shape. This is what is called surface tension. Using soap, reduces the cohesive force, and breaks the surface tension. Soapy water makes smaller drops than plain water. Since soapy drops are smaller, more soapy drops will fit on a penny than plain water drops. How many drops can you get on your penny?

HAPPENING MONDAY! Our MLK Day Tinkerdoodle workshop gives kids the chance to create their own self-portraits using cardboard and paint. They’ll assemble their portraits with precut shapes, layering them to highlight their unique features. Then, the fun really begins as they bring their artwork to life with paint!

This activity is perfect for ages 4 and up. Due to high demand, space is limited, and participants will need to register at the front desk upon arrival. The workshop is sponsored by Merry Go Rounds, a curated children’s consignment boutique.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
White paper, cardboard the size of the above circle, scissors, markers, glue, string,
pencil , ruler

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Draw a circle with six even triangles *see picture to right on paper. Use the ruler for
straight lines. Color each triangle a color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple).
2. Cut out the spinner and cut a circle of the same size out of cardboard. Glue the back of the spinner to the cardboard.
3. With a sharp pencil, punch two holes side by side in the center of the spinner.
4. Feed the ends of the string (8ft of string, folded in half) into each little hole. Pull through so each side is even, and tie the two ends together.
5. Spin the spinner toward you, while holding the ends of the string in each hand. Continue to spin until the string tightens and twists. Pull your hands apart when you are ready to spin the circle. The harder you pull, the faster it will spin! Watch the colors blur and then seem to lighten or disappear!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?:
The spinner blends all of the colored light together, creating white light. The faster you move the spinner, the more white light you see.
