WHAT YOU WILL NEED (adult supervision needed*):
Heavy whipping cream, a small leak-proof container like a baby food jar, table salt, crackers/toast

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Fill your jar 1/2 way with heavy whipping cream and seal with it’s tight cover.
Vigorously shake the jar. You should hear the cream sloshing around. The harder you shake, the quicker the butter will appear.
2. Soon, you won’t hear the sloshing. When the sloshing is gone, carefully open the jar and you’ll notice the cream is a smoother consistency.
3. Place the cover back on and continue shaking. It will feel like nothing is happening, but continue! After a few minutes, the sloshing will be back and your butter is ready to enjoy!
*The clump you now see is your butter. It’s unsalted so if you want to add salt, scoop out it out and mix in salt. The liquid remaining in the jar is buttermilk. It’s often used in baking.

What’s the Science?
When shaking the fresh cream, the fat molecules in the cream get shaken out of position and clump together. Eventually, after enough agitation, the fat molecules that are clumped so much forms butter. During this process, the fat molecules gets separated from the liquid in the cream. This liquid is called buttermilk and can be removed.

12/27/2023

WHAT YOU WILL NEED (adult supervision needed*):
1 tbsp. borax soap, 1/2 cup warm water, 2 tbsp. white glue, 1 tbsp. cornstarch,
food color, 2 bowls

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Mix 1/2 cup of warm water with 1 tbsp. borax soap in one of the bowls.
2. In the second bowl, mix 1 tbsp. cornstarch and 2 tbsp. white glue. Add food color if desired.
3. Combine the glue mixture with the borax mixture. It will be a gooey mixture that will harden quickly so you will want to roll the mixture in your hands to form a ball shape.

What’s the Science?
When the glue was added to the borax water, the glue became firm and bouncy because of a chemical reaction. The borax reacted with the glue causing the polymers, or long chains of molecules, in the glue to stick together and form an elastomer.
