Is yours spooky? Silly? Surprised? Slightly grumpy because someone woke it from its pumpkin patch nap? On Friday in MakerSpace, kids can glue their very own orange gourd onto a textured black background and then give it a face that’s entirely their own. Our Halloween craft takes inspiration from Ed Emberley, the master of turning simple fingerprints into amazing art. Kids can stamp their prints along a row of fence posts, then transform those little shapes into a wonderfully wicked Halloween scene. Pumpkins? Definitely. Jack-o-lanterns? Absolutely. A black cat or two? Why not! Emberley’s whole idea was that art doesn’t have to be complicated—and this project proves it.

The activity changes with the book, but there’s always a connection between what we read and what we do. Things are getting a little mixed up around here! What happens when Ed Emberley meets Pablo Picasso? A Halloween face mash-up that doesn’t have to follow any of the usual rules! For this creepy-crawly craft on Tuesday, kids will make their own spider and learn a little science along the way. A spider’s body is made up of two main parts: the cephalothorax (say that three times fast!) and the abdomen. Then come the eight legs! Keep your spider flat, or bend and glue those legs into a crawling position. Yikes! Is something moving over there?!

Drop paint-covered “eyeballs” into a bin, then shake, shake, SHAKE! As the eyes roll, tumble, and bounce across the paper, they leave behind a wild crisscross of lines, almost like a tangled spiderweb. Then, for the finishing touch, glue on a creepy-crawly spider. NEW! Pages & Play is a literature-based class designed especially for toddlers, where a children’s book becomes the starting point for exploration, discovery, and fun. Each Thursday at 10am, we’ll share a story and then take its ideas off the page with an activity inspired by what we’ve read.

Some weeks might mean a creative project. Others could bring a game, movement, imaginative play, or another hands-on adventure. The activity changes with the story, but the goal stays the same: to give little learners another way to experience and connect with new words, ideas, and concepts. Because toddlers learn by doing. When they can hear an idea, then move, make, play, or explore it, they’re building connections that can help it stick.
