Just as today, in the 18th century one of the most expensive essentials was lighting. Candles could only be made a certain time of year—typically late autumn, when the weather cooled and tallow from the annual harvest became available.
​Because light was literally currency, households relied on a strict hierarchy of thrift. While the wealthy burned clean beeswax, most everyday folks relied on smokey tallow candles, improvised rushlights (meadow rushes dipped in grease), or utilitarian Betty lamps burning refuse fat.
​When darkness fell, the world shrank to the physical radius of a single flickering flame. Every hour of light was actively paid for in labor or coin.
