Friday night lights.. from the oldest home in easton.

Just as today, in the 18th century one of the most expensive essentials was lighting. Candles could only be made a certain time of year—typically late autumn, when the weather cooled and tallow from the annual harvest became available.
Because light was literally currency, households relied on a strict hierarchy of thrift. While the wealthy burned clean beeswax, most everyday folks relied on smokey tallow candles, improvised rushlights (meadow rushes dipped in grease), or utilitarian Betty lamps burning refuse fat.
When darkness fell, the world shrank to the physical radius of a single flickering flame. Every hour of light was actively paid for in labor or coin.

By the 1770s the sawmill built by josiah keith was already in disrepair and not profitable.

The gardening begins!
Some of my healthy young vines. About 5 years old each. Also the grape vine closer to the window has the same rootstock as from the 3rd photo taken in the 1870. After some prior excavation i had discovered the vine still living .

Do you love the 18th century?! Come stay at the Josiah Keith house and spend some time in a living 18th century home . Were not a sterile museum. We live here and interact with the home the way they did. No velvet ropes, interact with period items pick them up feel them, sleep on an 18th century bed! Dont worry though we got your back , folk magic carvings on every door and fireplace no evil spirits here!

A closer look at the pottery that was found in the garden 💙 We have estimated they're from between 1770s-1800s! Isn’t that cool? What are your favorite personal finds?

Yesterday archeological finds at the josiah keith house. The most interesting by far is what appeared at 8 inches its a piece of shell edge pearl ware , specifically a saucer plate. This dates to 1780/1810 josiah keith iii would have been an old man by this time in his mid 70s. The further down we find some red stoneware and it dates to the first period of the home in 1717. These were found about a foot from where the grape vine is in the 3rd photo. Come experience the way the keith family lived. Spend and afternoon wkth a tour or spend the night and sleep on a bed from 1760!!
