This playful silver teapot was created by metalsmith Charles Crowley, a renowned New England metalsmith, who uses traditional techniques to create innovative hollowware forms. His silverware can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and in our own Permanent Collection. Charles Crowley and his wife, artist Claire Sanford, operate a studio in their home and also operate Top Dog Studio, a metal cooperative studio in Gloucester.

Living Traditions
To create rhythmic and textured baskets Jennifer Heller Zurick uses materials like willow bark and honeysuckle. Her exploration into weaving and textiles comes from an attraction to the ancient processes of basketry. Her work can be seen on display now through August 11 in the “Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America” exhibition.

In the midst of Gemini Season, our #FocusonFuller this week is this portrait diptych by Kate Blacklock. These pieces are created in porcelain and painted over in china and oil paints with portraits (anonymous women between the ages of 45 and 85). Her unique combination of techniques results in artwork that comments on beauty and aging in a magically realistic way

As we gear up for our upcoming exhibition along with @maine_crafts_association - “Maine Crafts Association: Ten Years of Master Craft Artists” - we’d like to begin introducing you to some of the artists who will be featured in the exhibit. Pictured is “Snow Glider”, the work of Christian Becksvoort - who was described by Ron Swanson of @nbc's "Parks and Recreation" as the “modern master of the Shaker style”. We couldn’t agree more, Ron.

#FocusonFuller Repoussé is the technique of working directly into metal to create sculptural reliefs. The process shapes the precious metal from the back, by hammering into a ‘pitch’ to develop the image, and working on the front (chasing) to refine. Skilled artists from the early Etruscans (c. 800 BCE) to Linda Kindler Priest, use this technique to transform flat metal into dynamic and vibrant images. We love this personality-packed brooch in our Permanent Collection, which measures just 4" by 1.5".
