Detail abounds in the extraordinary 𝘌𝘭 𝘑𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘩 𝘊𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 by Ahyin, designed by @micaela_ezra and available for purchase at the Jewish Museum Shop (https://bit.ly/30JuqMf). Inspired by metaphors of the Garden of Eden and drawing from a folkloric Mexican aesthetic, each one is embroidered and finished completely by hand. Symbols of blessing, fertility and protection —pomegranates, doves with olive branches, outstretched hamsas, and the Tree of Life — decorate the cover along with the Hebrew phrase “Shabbat Shalom.” Gold waxed linen and cream colored threads are combined for added elegance that elevates the weekly Sabbath observance and beautifies the ritual of blessing bread — 𝘏𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘵𝘻𝘷𝘢𝘩.⁣

“If you do it right, it will last forever. It’s as simple as that.” — Lella Vignelli⁣

Iconic designer #LellaVignelli (1934-2016), whose work is frequently described by design enthusiasts as “elegant,” “clean,” and “timeless,” created a suite of #Judaica exclusively for The Jewish Museum. First introduced in 2008, the suite includes a Kiddush cup, #candlesticks, and a Seder plate, each fabricated in Italy from sterling silver. Their designs are influenced by the pure lines of Modernism and the textures of 16th-century European costume — an ageless combination that reflects the enduring traditions of Judaism and elevates #Jewish observances.

On #Shabbat, we gather around the table for dinner and share blessings over bread and wine. A #challah cover is a special cloth used to cover the braided loaves of bread (challah) that are set out on the table. These covers lend both a decorative and ceremonial aspect to the weekly observance. ⁣

In our newest edition of 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴, https://bit.ly/2VYnMAV_GreaterGoods, meet Shari Rogoff Moraga from Leo's Dry Goods who has created a series of challah and matzah covers exclusively for the Jewish Museum Shop. Moraga’s designs, inspired by the flora and fauna of Israel as well as #Jewish themes such as the #Hebrew lunar calendar (shown here), are created using free motion embroidery, a technique she likens to “painting” in thread. ⁣ To read more about this

In our lastest installment of 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴, learn the story behind #Judaica design studio MI POLIN's "Mezuzah from this Home" project. ⁣

Walking around a former #Jewish neighborhood in her hometown of Warsaw, Poland, Mi Polin designer Helene Czernek noticed imprints made by #mezuzahs that had been removed from the doorposts of homes during World War II. Inspired to link the past to the present, she and design partner Aleksander Prugar, cast new mezuzahs from these traces. Each new #mezuzah, crafted in bronze and made in Poland, features the address where the trace was found and comes with a booklet detailing the history of the address.
