Happy Hanukkah! 🕎

#Hanukkah 🕎 the Jewish festival of lights, begins tonight at sundown. The holiday commemorates the miraculous events in ancient Israel during a desperate war for Jewish political and religious freedom. During this time, a small bit of oil was burned inside the newly rededicated Temple for eight days—giving the Jews time to find enough oil to keep the flame burning eternally. The Jewish Museum's collection of Hanukkah lamps is the largest in the world at nearly 1,050 pieces, amassed over the 114 years of the Museum's existence. See more than 80 Hanukkah lamps on view now from 4 continents, created across 6 centuries of artistic production.

Each one is handcrafted by women artisans in Kyrgyzstan who support their communities through craft. Made from sustainably harvested, locally sourced wool, each dreidel features skillfully hand-embroidered Hebrew letters and hand-stitched details. An attached string (not shown) makes the dreidel double as a decoration, or remove the string to play the dreidel game. @robertasmithnyt shares her favorite art books of 2019, including the catalogue that accompanies #EdithHalpert and the Rise of American Art, "a fascinating exhibition" on view now @thejewishmuseum through February 9.
Smith writes, "The show is a rare look at an art gallery’s history, and the exceedingly capable woman behind one of New York’s most influential one, devoting her considerable energies (and canny grasp of publicity) to the promotion of American artists like Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawrence and Charles Sheeler, as well as American folk art. Naturally the catalog is more comprehensive and it reproduces more works than the exhibition, making it a must-have for anyone interested in American art before Jackson Pollock and in the origins of the New York art world."

#Latkes, potato pancakes fried in oil, are eaten during #Hanukkah to commemorate the small amount of oil miraculously lasting eight days and nights for the Maccabees to light the Temple’s #menorah. Artist Shana Cowles, inspired by this delicious tradition, reproduced an original watercolor illustration of her family’s #latke recipe on a 100% cotton flour sack towel. A functional Hanukkah gift for the holiday cook that also adds a bit of #Hanukkah flair to any kitchen. 🕎🥔 http://bit.ly/2svX7Pk_LakteReceipeKitchenTowel
