Opening tomorrow 💫💫💫

“Muñoz, primarily a painter, engages in a unique creative process where she interprets and fragments the world through digital montages. Her scenes often depict the art world itself — museums, galleries, and fairs — providing a blank, neutral backdrop against which her figures, based on people and artworks, take center stage. She abstracts and exaggerates these figures, imbuing them with an expressionistic quality that she describes as “ambiguous, grotesque, and cartoonish.”

Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe: Ihirama (Drought)

Working between drawing, painting, and printmaking, Yanomami artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe carries forms of knowledge, spirituality, labour, and aesthetics in Indigenous life that have survived colonisation onto the page. Born in Sheroana, a small Indigenous community on the Upper Orinoco River in the Venezuelan Amazon, Hakihiiwe began making paper from natural fibres in the 1990s, a skill he learned by studying with the Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata. Atop sheets fabricated from local plant life, Hakihiiwe renders delicate dotted lines, circles, grids, curves, webs, and squiggles that reference forms of ancestral knowledge in highly personal ways. Hakihiiwe has often said in interviews that he alludes to ancient patterns, shapes, and forms in an effort to preserve memory. 2022 Madeline Weisburg

Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe
Up through January 29th

In his drawings, Hakihiiwe develops a synthetic, concrete, and minimal language of the vast and intense relationship of its community with the landscape that surrounds it. These links permeate the realm of the personal and the collective, his work being a contemporary revision of the cosmogony and the Yanomami imaginary.

Hakihiiwe has been working as an artist since the early 1990s, when he learned to craft paper from natural fibers with the Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata . “Before Laura came into my life, I didn’t paint,” Hakihiiwe told Hyperallergic by email. “I worked in the orchard, I hunted, I fished, I made arrows and bows and other tools.” However, earlier in life, the artist had made drawings in school, and had grown up observing the creative work of his mother, a master basket weaver and body painter.

Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe (Sheroana, 1971) is an indigenous Yanomami artist who lives and works between Caracas and Platanal, Venezuela. Beginning in the 90’s, Hakihiiwe has been developing a visual language that traces and memorializes indigenous landscapes, cosmogony, and ancestral traditions.
The drawings in this exhibition are part of a series that explore the theme of drought and the fragile state of our ecosystem. Hakihiiwe aims to raise awareness about the ongoing climate crisis and profound impact of drought on the environment and indigenous ways of life. (Read full press release in bio)
