Rewriting a Migrant Manifesto
Saturday, October 10, 2026, 4pm ‼️

The Migrant Manifesto was written in 2011 at Immigrant Movement International in Corona, Queens, following a convening organized by Tania Bruguera and produced by Creative Time and the Queens Museum. Community organizers, academics, politicians, and artists came together to reflect on migration, drawing on the direct experiences of migrant communities as well as on economic, social, and historical analysis.

Fifteen years later, migrants still face precarity, discrimination, and exclusion, and anti-migrant policies have intensified. Our current exhibition Unknown Migrants examines the impact of 9/11 on migrant communities, returning to a moment that profoundly transformed the migration landscape and exposed systems of invisibilization and exclusion. Against this backdrop, we invite the community to gather again to imagine a possible future, revitalize the language and tools of the Manifesto, and propose a contemporary perspective on migration.

We’re delighted to share that Lizania Cruz’s Tropical Here? [¿Aquí Tropical?] (2026) was selected by Pérez Art Museum Miami for the inaugural PAMM Acquisition Prize at The Armory Show 2026.

The history of remembrance has repeatedly returned to moments when the record ceases to be whole, when it obscures rather than honors. Memorials are often built to hold steady the recognition of events and people, yet within their permanence also lie fractures and absences. It is precisely in this unstable terrain, where presence and erasure trade places, that Unknown Migrants situates itself.

For The Armory Show 2026, in the Focus section curated by María Elena Ortiz, artist Lizania Cruz presents new work that continues her exploration of the effects of an expanding tropics on a global scale, as well as the interdependent relationships between humans and more-than-human species.
Bringing together participatory works, printmaking, and archival research, the presentation considers how language, place, and systems of power shape our understanding of belonging and otherness, as well as our relationship to the plants, animals, and other forms of life with which we share and shape the natural world.
