“On Love”, by Fernanda Fragateiro, opens Thursday, April 18. Join us for an afternoon reception on April 20 from 12PM to 6PM.

Fragateiro’s work involves an archaeological approach to the social, political, and aesthetic history of modernism. Through continuous research with material from archives, documents, and objects, she establishes a nuanced political feminist position by uncovering the architectural gestures of mostly absent female subjects. In the annals of history, dormant things lie-unsaid, unfinished, discarded. Fragateiro reexamines and renders them into three-dimensional form. “On Love” is a constellation of conversations with women artists, architects, and designers-from Elaine Lustig Cohen and Otti Berger, to Lina Bo Bardi and Alyson Smithson who, by becoming the caretakers for history, have been oftentimes occluded from it.

Julianne Swartz: Tenderness, open through March 14.

Several works activate the architecture of the gallery space and call attention to the overlooked. Milled wood planks of various sizes lean inconspicuously against the wall, initially appearing as by-products of an installation in progress. Titled Spectrum, their underbellies conceal bands of reflective color. Shy rainbows peek out, after a storm.

Join us today for an afternoon opening reception of Tenderness, a solo exhibition of Julianne Swartz.

Pictured: Corner Zero-reverse arc, 2024, stainless steel, enamel, magnets, 14 x 29 x 24 inches

Excerpt: “Reducing materials to their most ephemeral and precarious states, she crafts sound, ambient light, and kinetic energy into physiological encounters. Her work engages a palpable vulnerability: the tenderness of bodies, the fragility of form, and the susceptibility of matter to the intangible. The exhibition presents work from four new series—T-Scores, Emptiness weaves, Corner Zeros and Spectrum.”

Bienvenu Steinberg & C is pleased to inaugurate Viewing Room, a program of exhibitions presented alongside the gallery’s main program. This new initiative debuts with Robert Rauschenberg’s Late Editions with an opening reception tonight, March 8, from 6 - 8pm.

Each exhibition will spotlight a particular body of work by a single artist for a duration of two weeks. Viewing Room will showcase both historical presentations and contemporary artists, with invitations extended to outside institutions and curators for collaboration.

“Both curiosity and generosity seem to be at the heart of Rauschenberg’s printmaking; curiosity in his sense of wonder, his wanting to know how materials and tools work, his ‘what-would-happen-if’ attitude; and generosity in his sense of accepting what appears to be virtually everything under the sun as, at least in principle, a potentially important and interesting subject for art.”

Tatah - Matisse. Sans Titre, an exhibition of Djamel Tatah’s work curated by Éric de Chassey, opens on March 16th at the Musée Matisse in Nice.

The exhibition runs through May 27.

“In spring 2024, the Matisse Museum in Nice is offering an updated display of its collection, involving the painter Djamel Tatah (born 1959 in Saint-Chamond) and exhibition curator Éric de Chassey. They selected around a hundred graphic works and sculptures by Henri Matisse (1869-1954), spanning his entire career, from the museum’s collections, supplemented by exceptional loans from the National Institute of Art History (INHA). They will alternate with around thirty large-format paintings by Tatah, chosen from his production over the last twenty years and belonging to public as well as private collections.“

Tenderness, a solo exhibition of Julianne Swartz opens Thursday, March 14. Join us for an afternoon reception on March 16 from 12 - 7PM.

“Swartz works with subtle phenomena as a means to heighten sensitivity. Reducing materials to their most ephemeral and precarious states, she crafts sound, ambient light, and kinetic energy into physiological encounters. Her work engages a palpable vulnerability: the tenderness of bodies, the fragility of form, and the susceptibility of matter to the intangible. The exhibition presents work from four new series—T-Scores, Emptiness weaves, Corner Zeros and Spectrum.”

Congratulations to Ana Tiscornia and Liliana Porter whose work is included in re(FOCUS) at UArts alongside  Mary Carlson, Karen Kilimnik, June Leaf, Ellen Lesperance, and Helen O’Leary. The exhibition runs through April 20.

excerpt from the exhibition text:

“(re)FOCUS is an exciting and essential component of the important city-wide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts—a grassroots feminist project and one of the first large-scale surveys of the work of American women artists—which culminated in over 150 exhibitions, panels, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations.
Taken together, the personal historic mythologies and structures of these seven artists provide a compelling visual chronicle of the enormous strengths, diversity, politics, and subtle sensitivities of women working today.”

Bienvenu Steinberg & J is pleased to announce “Crude Gratitude” a group exhibition curated by Alice Audouin featuring the works of Art Orienté Objet, Sara Favriau, Peter Kim, Haroon Mirza, Otobong Nkanga and Michael Wang. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, February 8 at 6pm.

Excerpt from exhibition text:

Is gratitude a new shift in civilization? Extending towards the living and the cosmos, does it announce a more ecological civilization to come? Are contemporary environmental artists pioneering this new era? The exhibition explores this potentiality by bringing together six contemporary artists who adopt the praxis of care and promote interspecies collaboration. The artists in ‘Crude Gratitude’ present an alternative lens to perceive the world, guided by attention towards each entity, whether on a microscopic or cosmic scale: an ecology of empathy.

Liliana Porter: The Gardner and Other Situations at CCS Bard curated by Lauren Cornell, from January 24 - February 25, 2024.

“Everybody has their own plots,” said Liliana Porter, “but when you tease them out of their circumstances, they create something that is different from what happens when you had a script.” A single point in a plot undergirds each of Porter’s works on view in this intimate presentation.

The titles—among them, Forced Labor (Blue Sand)(2008), The Way Out (with Red Car) (2022), and The Gardener (2012)—each offer a glint of a character or circumstance, and all provoke a contest between a single life and wider conditions of precarity. These shards of stories and their surrounding emptiness, emphasized by the works’ lack of edges, leave the script unfinished and ask the viewer to speculate on whether the scenes depict disaster, recovery, drudgery, or joy. Such irresolvable tensions—essential to Porter’s work—are rendered with characteristic humor and depth.

The works on view in The Gardener and Other Situations reflect enduring themes in her practice: language, communication, and a will to survive in the face of innumerable and not fully knowable crises and states of being.

Join us this Saturday, January 13 from 12 - 6pm for The Stone Age featuring Alina Bliumis, Jim Campbell, Daniella Dooling, Jane Yang-D’Haene, Fernanda Fragateiro, Kenji Fujita, Adriana Furlong, Adam Fuss, Peter Kim, Marco Maggi, Stefana McClure, Jane Rosen, Julianne Swartz and Djamel Tatah.

Pictured above is an included work by Stefana McClure. The artists Protest Stones embody the ambiguous relation between language and violence, between protesting and protecting. The hanging sculptures, lassos awaiting to be thrown, remind us that poetry is not auxiliary to history, but creates it.

Bienvenu Steinberg & J is pleased to announce The Stone Age, a group exhibition including fourteen artists, opening January 13 from 12-6pm.

The artists in the show document a moment where articulated thought seems to fade away, where binary thinking replaces nuance, where opinion replaces concept. The exhibition is an imaginary digs into a crystallized landscape almost devoid of human presence.

It is the last few days to catch Sergio Sisters exhibition Sister Papers on view until January 11th.

“In Sister’s paintings, forms define an attitude, they reveal a character. The circumference - always looking onto itself - is too selfish but the rectangle opens the field for a dialogue, it expands, duplicates and stretches into a rhythm of vibrations and silences. Sister approaches color in the same way that he confers geometry and personality. Just like a humidity indicator card changes color with the level of moisture, Sister demands his colors to carry out a main function: to capture and reveal the most fleeting emotions.”

Opening reception for Sérgio Sister exhibition, “The Sister Papers,” opens Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 12 to 6pm, at Bienvenu Steinberg & J.

The show delves into Sister's extensive career with roots in abstraction and permutations of the ready-made. Sister's work can be viewed in the continuity of 1960’s American minimalism, European Arte Povera and the Brazilian Neo-Concrete movement. The exhibition will highlight a selection of paintings on paper from the late 1980s to today shown for the first time, and key works from different eras: one of the very first Caixas alongside a contemporary one, and a Pontalete (post).

Opening reception for Jane Yang-D’Haene’s solo exhibition, “Handle Me with Care,” opens to the public Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 6 to 8pm, at Bienvenu Steinberg & J.

Rooted firmly in traditions of 달항아리 - dalhangari, or, moon jars - 19 works extend from Yang-D'Haene's earliest recollections of the Korean landscape. Richly textured surfaces recall the mountains and seas of her homeland, and intricate glazing methods imbue each piece with its own story, or identity. Creating new visions of place and self through abstraction and experimentation to continue the artist's work across cultures, the newest vessels featured in this exhibition push out from Yang-D'Haene's formative interest in those places of her earliest memories, to center an even more familiar landscape: the body.

Ana Tiscornia's link with architecture and modernity are the starting point of From east to west and from north to south, the new exhibition that will be inaugurated in the Park of Memory next Friday, December 2.

Curated by Florencia Battiti, the work includes installations, collages, assemblies, painting, books and photography that allow the artist to elaborate metaphors about the constant cycles of construction, destruction, loss and reconstruction that humanity suffers. Displacement, fissure, uncertainty and repetition are constant in his work.
