Ouattara Watts in the New York Times arts section this week:

“Watts’s artworks are charged with their maker’s enigmatic tendencies. Animated by African spiritual traditions, mysticism and metaphysical cosmologies, his paintings — large canvases and wood panels that hover between figuration, abstraction and collage — are dense with unknown elements.”

Here is a photo of Watts in his studio from the New York Times, as well as two prints from the artist in our collection:

Abstract Expressions: 7 Paintings by 7 Painters
On view from November 12 through December 14, 2024
Opening Reception: Tuesday, November 12, 6-8PM

Bienvenu Steinberg & C is pleased to announce Abstract Expressions, an exhibition of seven works by seven artists each of whom expands upon the traditions of gestural abstraction in diverse and individual ways. Just as the founding artists grouped under the heading of Abstract Expressionism presented a broad range of stylistic innovation, the contemporary painters included in the current show demonstrate the range, richness and continued vitality of this significant sector. All the painters featured in the exhibition live and work in New York City but much like the post war generation of artists often identified as the New York School they come from many places and many generations.

If you’ve been walking the streets of Ponsonby/Grey Lynn recently, you may have come across Owen Dippie’s incredible mural of Max Gimblett. Located on Pollen Street, the mural was completed over the holiday period. On the location, Dippie said, “It was essential for this piece to be located in Auckland City – Max’s birthplace. The wall is located a stone’s throw from my studio, so I had been visualising an artwork on it for some time. It felt right for this portrait.”

The mural depicts Max stunningly, with his likeness set in a distinctive quatrefoil. Dippie states, “I was introduced to Max’s work as a young student and was instantly impacted. Throughout my career Max has been a constant source of inspiration. I respect his dedication to his practice and this mural is in honour of that. I believe in giving people their flowers while they can smell them. Thank you, Max.” This heartfelt tribute to Max is a wonderful addition to public art in the city.

Max Gimblett’s show “The Alchemist” is open at Bienvenu Steinberg & J Gallery until June 23.

“The Alchemist,” by Max Gimblett, opens Thursday, May 23. Join us for the opening reception from 6PM to 8PM.

Max Gimblett is a painter, calligrapher, and Rinzai Zen monk. His work draws on a broad range of aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual traditions that overarch the divisions between East and West. “The Alchemist” is the artist’s first solo appearance in New York in more than a decade and will show his recent paintings. The exhibition’s focus is on his iconic quatrefoil canvases that are noteworthy both for the spiritual universality of their form and for their sumptuous use of color, light, and precious metals.
