Kifwebe mask. 3rd of a 3-part series.
The Kifwebe was not merely an African decor. It had a role, a spiritual dimension, and a relationship with its community.
What did its presence do for the people?
When the Kifwebe entered the village, dance made the spirit visible. Its performance could protect, teach, restore order, and unite the community through ritual.

Why a masquerade, and what happens when it is activated?
The Kifwebe is more than a mask. In the masquerade, the face becomes a spirit presence, crossing the boundary between the human world and the unseen. The dancer’s identity is deliberately displaced by the masquerade.

Its carved striations and raised crest belong to a masquerade tradition used in initiations, funerals, and community protection.
