Kuba textile, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Material and rhythm! Mysterious and elegant!
Kuba textiles are among the most celebrated artistic traditions of Central Africa. Woven from raffia palm fiber, then cut, stitched, and embroidered, each composition reflects individual creativity within a shared visual language.
Historically, these works embodied, social, political, and spiritual meanings, and were created collaboratively with family and clan groups. Collected and studied by institutions such as, the Smithsonian and Brooklyn Museum, Kuba textiles continue to inspire collectors and designers alike.
