“This double-sided processional Asafo flag with appliqué and embroidered design was made in the 19th century in Ghana, using imported cotton, probably from Manchester. It carries multiple meanings for me…For me, Asafo flags are one of the most important art forms to have come out of West Africa. They take images and naval insignia from 500 years of European colonial expansion and combine them with local traditions and culture to form a unique visual language that is very similar to that of Indian chintz, but much less well known.”
