This painting holds a photo of Kyra with her late grandmother, Eureen Brathwaite, next to a real winning ticket. It’s a small ritual between two people, kept the way families keep what matters.

“Baltimore feels like a sanctuary to really make good work without feeling the pressure of the who’s who.” — Taj Poscé

Some artists come to Baltimore for school. Taj transferred in, and stayed to build a life around his practice. “I was born in the 90’s, but I’d imagine that what NY was like in the 80’s is what Baltimore is like today.”

That belief in what’s still being built here is not an accident. It is what this city gives him room to do.

Beyond the Boroughs is Good Black Art’s annual artist list and peer-to-peer mentorship program, spotlighting emerging artists paving their own paths in the art world. This year, we’re in Baltimore and its neighboring regions.

Taj Poscé is a painter and educator based in Baltimore. He transferred into the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University (Tyler School of Art and Arch.) as a junior in 2016 and has spent the last decade building a sustainable life around his practice, now teaching painting and drawing at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) alongside artists like LaToya Hobbs and Ernest Shaw.

His work has been shown across the country, and he received an artist grant from Baltimore’s Mayor’s Office last year.
