Some artists come to Baltimore for school. Ciarra stayed because of how it made her feel.

That warmth is not an accident. It is what this city builds.

𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦 is Good Black Art annual artist list and peer-to-peer mentorship program spotlighting emerging artists paving their own paths in the art world. This year we’re in Baltimore and its neighboring regions.

Ciarra K. Walters is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in the Baltimore area. She holds an MFA in Photography and Media & Society from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and has exhibited across the country including at the California African American Museum (). Working primarily with eggshells, her practice spans performance, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, using the body as both subject and site to explore fragility, lineage, and self-discovery.

Ciarra was also a past Good Black Art Spotlight Artist, and we are proud to welcome her back as part of the 2026 cohort.

Introducing the 2026 cohort of Good Black Art’s 𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦.

𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦 is Good Black Art’s annual artist list and peer-to-peer mentorship program, spotlighting emerging artists paving their own paths in the art world.

This year is different.

For the first time, we’re taking the program on the road. It was built in New York, but the stories we’re here to tell have never been limited to one city. Artists everywhere are doing the work, building community, and carving paths that others can follow. It’s time we meet them where they are.

We’re starting in Baltimore.

Charm City has one of the most vibrant and underrecognized creative communities in the country. This cohort represents artists rooted in Baltimore and its neighboring regions, each one proof that incredible work is being made everywhere, not just in the cities that get the most attention.

More than talent, these artists embody collaboration, kindness, and humility. They were selected not only for their craft but for the way they show up for others. The mentorship, the generosity, the quiet work of making a path visible for someone coming up behind them.

That is what 𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦 honors.

A reckoning with tradition exists in all aspects of my processes, from how I study, to how I dream, to how I dress, all of which replenish my creative practice through experimentation, memory, collaboration, and the poetics of everyday life.” — Java Jones

𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦 spotlights rising artists forging their own paths in New York City’s art world. Java Jones is our final featured artist from Cohort 3.

Jones is an anti-disciplinary artist, curator, and scholar based in New York whose practice explores experimental image-making, haptics, and multi-sensory forms of storytelling. Working across sculpture, photography, installation, sound, and moving image, Jones investigates how memory and digital culture shape the ways we engage images. Their work often challenges vision-centric modes of spectatorship, transforming photographic surfaces into tactile encounters that engage touch, sound, and spatial experience.

Jones received an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design and an MS in Fiction and Entertainment from SCI-Arc. They were awarded a Technology Residency at Pioneer Works (2023), participated in the PhotoVogue Festival (2023), co-curated exhibitions and programming for OpenAI (2024), and was recently selected to present at the Studio Museum in Harlem for the annual Museums as Systems symposium this year in June.

Alongside their artistic practice, Jones works at the intersection of curation, communications, and public programming—developing conversations and experiences that bridge contemporary art, technology, and collective forms of knowledge production.

Currently, they are “enjoying the sun in a new era”, reading Octavia Butler’s “Dawn”, and preparing to launch their first brand.

Black women teachers changed the course of history. Their stories are finally being told.

Good Black Art is proud to have helped curate works featured in 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘶𝘴𝘩 by educator, author, and longtime collector Marlee S. Bunch. For this project, we selected five artists with Southern and rural roots whose practices speak directly to the landscapes, communities, and histories at the heart of this book.

𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘶𝘴𝘩 documents the pivotal role Black women teachers played in advocating for and providing education to Black students before and after desegregation in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Drawing on oral histories, personal memory, and Civil Rights history, Marlee illuminates the interior lives of women who guided students through Jim Crow laws and the Civil Rights era, and the communities that made it possible.

Good Black Art exists wherever culture lives. In this case, the South, its education, its history, and its community. There is no story our artists cannot speak to.

𝗕𝗘𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗦 spotlights rising artists forging their own paths in New York City’s art world.

Brooklyn-based ceramic artist Kemi brings a background in design and community engagement to a practice that spans functional to sculptural work. Her pieces reflect her concept of home — where memories, identities, and environments converge. She creates as a way to document the experiences, people, and places that shape her sense of belonging.
