What does stand for? This time, it's Artists Sitting and Pondering.

NARS artists in residence JP and Lara .x.y.m.o.r.e led the cohort through an ASAP inspired by picnicking throughout art history.

Drawing from paintings of picnics across time, the two painting artists created a program that invited everyone to think about gathering, leisure, landscape, and the many ways we come together.

A little art history, a little pondering, and a lot of time spent together.

Meet the artists next Friday, August 28, at the opening of the Season III, 2026 Residency Exhibition + Open Studios, 6โ€“8 pm!

Hand-moulded black metallic foil sculptures, cast from tree roots and branches, converse with handmade translucent paper, yielding a suspended realm of shadow and light. Evoking a celestial theatre, the work invites viewers to wander beneath an atmospheric canopy where darkness and luminosity converge, prompting reflection on otherness, transformation, and regeneration.

๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ... considers how bodies are made recognizable through the systems around them, from technological protocols to cultural codes, and asks what that recognition demands in return. Drawing on ร‰douard Glissant's "right to opacity," the exhibition turns to what happens once something has already been made legible. A reading shapes what is expected of a body, but never exhausts what it can be. Across sculpture, performance, textiles, photography, and installation, the works resist the authority of that reading, withholding what is asked of them or opening onto meanings beyond those first assigned. Rather than resolving these tensions, they hold open the possibility of encounter without demanding complete transparency first.

What does stand for? This week, it was Artists Sharing Artistsโ€™ Practices.

NARS Program and Curatorial Manager Angelica Fuentes led the artists in residence in a poetry workshop, where artists wrote a cinquain in response to one anotherโ€™s artworks.

A chance to look closely, put words to what we see, and engage with each otherโ€™s practices from a different perspective.

What does ASAP stand for? It depends on the week.

Artists Sitting and Pondering.
As Slow as Possible.
A Space for Art and Play.
Artists Sharing Artistsโ€™ Practices.

ASAP is our weekly artist-led gathering, where two residents take over the session and invite the cohort into an activity, experiment, conversation, or game.

So far this season, artists have sent the group on a scavenger hunt with and , created an exquisite co**se with , and explored the responsibilities of โ€œthe artistโ€ in a conversation led by and .

No two ASAPs are the same, but they always offer a space for artists to exchange traditions, perspectives, and creative approaches. We can't wait to see where the next session leads us to!

Each month, NARS artists-in-residence meet one-on-one with 3-4 curators, fellow artists, writers, educators, and other professionals from across the art world through our Studio Visitors Program.

These ongoing conversations offer residents valuable feedback, introduce new perspectives, and help them build meaningful relationships within New York Cityโ€™s art community and beyond.

Last week, we welcomed Deric Carner, Director of Exhibitions and Programming at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts , to meet with our Season III, 2026 artists.

Thank you, Deric, for engaging so thoughtfully with each artist and their practice!
