The square as a format gets a bad rap, but as the great Huey Lewis once sang, "It's hip to be square". There's a certain confidence reflected in an artwork that knows exactly where its four corners are and bucks the rectangular norm. The square is tidy without being fussy, balanced without being boring, and it's very good at holding its own on a wall. Whether we're talking about work that's front-loaded with a riot of color, a geometric composition, something with a narrative, or the perfectly framed chunk of landscape, square art is like “I’ve got this.”
Perhaps that's why the timeless format keeps showing up in art, design, and culture. It’s the perfect little stage for big ideas. The shape can feel modern and minimal, playful and poppy, meditative or unexpected (flip it on its diagonal, and you've got a diamond). Add one or two to a gallery wall, and you've got your focal points; your grounding elements. Why are we talking about this, you ask? It's because you can search 20x200's site by orientation...which is an element of work that's absolutely fundamental to its essence, but something we don't always necessarily consider when browsing.
Here's to the noble square! https://buff.ly/R5szsfi
