Did you know Austin Uzor’s work is part of the permanent collection at The Newark Museum of Art?

AUSTIN UZOR | Austin Uzor
Born 1991, Imo State, Nigeria Lives and works in Dallas, Texas
Transients, 2024
Oil on Canvas
Purchase 2024 Alberto Burri Memorial Fund established by Stanley J. Seeger
2024.15

Notice the lone figure and red door in this seashore painting. The artist often blends realism with abstraction and nature with the manufactured. In so doing, he conveys a sense of interstitial space. In Transients, Uzor uses water, a critical agent in the migration of African people, to speak to his personal experience and the universal diasporic condition of being displaced.

KAYLYN WEBSTER | Kaylyn Webster

This portrait is of one of my best friends, an artist and writer, Arely Herrera. She was born and raised in Memphis but her father is from Zacatecas, Mexico. The tattoo on her hand says “Zacatlan” to honor those roots. The background is inspired by “Zacatecas”, which means “where there is abundant grass” or “people of the grasslands”.

The grass blades caress her head like hands, operating as a new representation of a halo in my work. The ladybugs traveling on the blades bring to mind the cardinal symbolism with their red coloring and spiritual meaning of protection, renewal and transformation. The personified land and ladybugs come together to illustrate how nature protects and provides for its people who respect it and have roots in it.

WITHOUT BOUNDARIES | Moses Salihou Moses Salihou

Through movement and expressive brushstrokes, Moses Salihou allows faces and features to emerge without sharply defining them. His portraits invite us to slow down and discover the presence within each work.
