Seven woods, brought together through the language of joinery.

The Undulating Mirror by Yousaf Shahbaz & Saira Ahsan for STRATA combines seven types of wood in a frame defined by varied joinery styles and a flowing silhouette. Mother of pearl inlays echo the grains of the wood, creating a contrast between the natural patterns of the timber and the precision of the detailing. A high-gloss lacquer finish brings the different tones and surfaces into focus.

The marks of change become part of the form.

Trace Console by Nithika & Annanya Agarwal for Tabula Rasa draws from the philosophy of Kintsugi, extending the idea of repair beyond the brass lines set into its granite top. Beneath it, hand-chiselled mahogany twists and branches into an irregular, sculptural base, retaining the marks of the tools that shaped it.

Granite, brass and wood each carry a different expression of transformation, bringing fracture, repair and growth into one piece.

A bench that shifts the way people sit together.

Gravity by Abin Chaudhuri for Hands and Minds draws from Mumbai’s urban landscape, translating the city’s coastline and shifting spatial relationships into an elongated, balancing form. A central fulcrum introduces a gentle rocking motion, turning the act of sitting into an opportunity for movement and interaction.

Antique brass, engraved detailing, teak wood and upholstery bring together the piece’s sculptural form and functional purpose.

Transformation is never a return to what was.

Roopantara: Matter in Metamorphosis, Edition II of House of Santal, explores change as a process that leaves its mark on material, memory and form. Drawing on ideas of creation, preservation, destruction and repair, the edition considers how objects carry traces of what they have passed through, and how those traces become part of what they are.

Here, transformation is not about restoring things to an original state, but allowing them to become something new.

Matter in the process of becoming.

Edition II of House of Santal, Roopantara, looks at transformation through material, surface and form. Oxidised metals, darkened wood and weathered textures hold traces of time, while shifting geometries and altered forms explore what happens when matter moves between states.
Rather than treating heritage as something fixed, the collection considers how it continues to evolve through material, making and contemporary design.

A flying carpet, held in a single sculptural form.

Lehar by Abin Chaudhuri for Hands and Minds takes the familiar idea of a mythical flying carpet and reworks it into a lounge with a flowing, undulating silhouette. Its parametric form rises and falls like fabric caught in motion, while bespoke fabric, upholstery and wood bring the sculptural structure into a seating experience.

An antler form, carved from solid rosewood.

The Antler Settee takes its shape from the undulating lines of antlers, translated into carefully selected sections of rosewood. Artisans spend weeks hand-carving the wood into its flowing form, with mother of pearl inlays tracing the antlers and drawing attention to their contours. A high-gloss finish brings the depth of the rosewood into focus.

The Fragments Console turns a solid volume into a shifting landscape of wood and pattern.

Its scooped form is carved from a monolithic cuboid, while hundreds of individually assembled wooden elements create a field of Sadeli marquetry across the surface. Traditionally used on boxes and decorative objects, the craft is reworked here across a curved, sculptural form.

A mountain range, translated through joinery and material.

Mountain Screen draws from the jagged outlines of Pakistan’s mountain ranges, bringing travertine, brass, steel and four types of wood into a single composition. Ashwood, walnut, mahogany and red oak are joined with the harder surfaces of metal and stone, with hand-painted textures used to bring out their individual character.

The detailing is central to the piece. Each material remains distinct while becoming part of one architectural form.
