Of course this iconic emblem would appear on back-to-back festival posters -- alligators are a New Orleans symbol of power, ancient wisdom & adaptability.

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, we salute Chief Jim Billie of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. He was one of the longest-serving elected leader in the Western hemisphere, from 1976-2001, and again from 2011-2016.

At age 14, he began alligator wrestling at a roadside attraction to earn money for his family. Alligator wrestling was one revenue stream for Seminoles to capitalize on the burgeoning Florida tourism industry of the 20th century.

He also served in the military, organized Seminoles to track down co***ne smugglers & recorded a Grammy-nominated song, "Big Alligator"!

crocodilians are some of the longest living reptiles?! 50 years is just the beginning for an alligator -- they can make it to over 100 years old! Although this is rare. Gator lifespans trend longer in captivity, but even wild gators can make it to upwards of 70 years. 🐊

Not only do individual gators live long, the species has been around more than most animals - a whopping 70 million years! Millions of years of evolution have molded them into true survivors. 🌞 They conserve energy, wear natural armor, and have an impressive immune system that helps them thrive in wetland environments. 🌾

Alligators help shape healthy ecosystems by creating water-filled gator holes that support fish, turtles, birds, and other wildlife during dry seasons.
