People are fascinated with the American Alligator because of their reputation as fearsome beasts and symbols of an ancient past living today. Every day, one reads another story about a large alligator intruding into ordinary lives. The Great American Alligator Museum in New Orleans exists to showcase all aspects of the American Alligator: scientific modern a

nd fossil specimens, alligators in folk art, unusual household items, vintage leather goods, movies, and toys. Remarkably, no other museum in the world pays homage to the American Alligator. We hope that the museum will expand everyone’s view of the Alligator beyond the sensational stories in the news and expose the many ways the American Alligator has become a part of American daily life.

Throwback to the 1960s! Visit the Vintage Toy Exhibit inside the Great American Alligator Museum to delight in historical alligator toys of yesteryear, including this Crocodile Gena.

Crocodile Gena was the star of his own Soviet book (1966) & stop-motion film (1969) about a crocodile who works at a zoo!?

We see a striking resemblance to Wally Gator, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character who debuted in 1962. Learn more about these friendly crocodilian characters at the Gator Museum!

these alligator ancestors have been around for over 200 million years, since the Jurassic period! While the dinosaurs didn't make it, gators adapted and survived. We’re constantly amazed by their resilience.
