What happens when a Yiddish-infused Jewish story meets the Deep South?

On October 29 at 6 PM, Executive Director Kenneth Hoffman will be in conversation with Stuart Green, co-author of The Rebbe of Baton Rouge, a new novel about love, community, faith, rivalry, and the unexpected ways Jewish life takes root in the South.

Set in Baton Rouge, the novel follows a Yiddish literature professor returning to her childhood home and a new rabbi trying to keep his small congregation afloat, all while navigating the complexities, quirks, and connections of Southern Jewish life.

There will be a book signing following the event.

🇮🇱✨ Maccabiah Y'all is only 1 week away!

Join MSJE and Maccabi USA on Wednesday, November 4, at 6:00 PM CST for a special virtual event that celebrates the experiences of Southern Jewish athletes who participated in this summer's Maccabiah in Israel.

This gathering will provide an opportunity to:

🤝 Reconnect with fellow athletes, coaches, and members of our Southern Jewish community
💙 Share the stories and experiences that made the Maccabiah special
📖 Help preserve these memories for future generations

Hosted by Arnie Fielkow and Donna Orender, the event will feature a panel discussion with athletes, coaches, and other participants sharing their personal Maccabiah stories. We’ll also hear welcoming remarks from representatives of Maccabi World Union, Maccabi USA, and MSJE.

🌎 Every family has an immigration story.

For MSJE’s Hillary Atkinson, that story begins with her great-grandfather, Morris Watsky.

His journey to America and the life he built here is one chapter in the much larger story of Jewish immigration to the South. Across generations, Jewish immigrants arrived in Southern communities, built businesses and families, established congregations, and became part of the rich and complicated fabric of Southern life.

Today, Hillary carries Morris’s story forward and shares it as part of her own.

On National Immigrants Day, we’re reflecting on the journeys that brought Jewish families to the South and the stories that continue to connect generations.

For centuries, Jewish stories have imagined the golem: a creature brought to life by human hands and sacred words, often created to protect a community.

On November 9th, join MSJE for Paper Midrash: “Make Your Own Golem,” a creative workshop that brings this legendary figure to life through Jewish learning and papercutting. ✂️
