As a volunteer board member, your enthusiasm and time are the most important elements required. We are especially looking for folks with fundraising and/or bookkeeping experience. Voting members of the NOPA Board will have the opportunity and responsibility to help shape the direction of the organization — including programming in the gallery space, PhotoNOLA, and weighing in on financial and leadership decisions.

Current members of the board will review the candidates and extend invitations the week of September 21.

This is an exciting period for NOPA, but we still need your help! If you know someone who would be a great candidate, forward this post. If you have any questions, DM us or email

Things are moving and shaking at the Photo Alliance! Last month we moved into our new space at the Art Spot, and today we are reaching out to announce that NOPA is soliciting nominations for new voting board members! Are you interested in supporting our vibrant photography community while helping to steer NOPA into an exciting new future? And have some photo-based fun in the process? Then this could be the board for you!

As a volunteer board member, your enthusiasm and time are the most important elements required. The term of commitment is two years, with regular attendance expected at monthly board meetings. This round, we are especially looking for folks with fundraising and/or bookkeeping experience to join the team. This call is to recruit voting members of the NOPA Board, who will have the opportunity and responsibility to help shape the direction of the organization — including programming in the gallery space, PhotoNOLA, and weighing in on financial and leadership decisions. (In the coming months, NOPA will also introduce a new board position to be held by a photographer member of the Alliance on a rotating, one-year term, and open non-voting, advisory positions.)

From here, the process is simple. Interested parties should fill out this short application Link Below describing your interests and relevant experience. Submit your application by August 31. Current members of the board (including the Executive Committee) will review the candidates and extend invitations the week of September 21.

This is an exciting period for NOPA, but a robust board is at the center of our efforts. We still need your help. Please consider becoming a voting member - or if you know someone that would be a great candidate - forward this. If you have any questions, please email Camille Barnett at [email protected].

Sincerely,
The NOPA Executive Board

Please complete the required fields to submit application. All non-required filed are helpful but not mandatory. Thank you for your interest in joining the NOPA leadership!

We are pleased to announce the two honorable mentions and the recipient for the Michael P Smith Fund for Documentary Photography.

2026 recipient: Cristina Velásquez
Honorable mentions: Jared Ragland & Ariana Gomez

Thank you to our juror, Alyssa Ortega Coppleman.

Note from the juror: “At the very least, the best projects sustain my interest throughout repeat viewings. At best, they reveal new aspects upon each consecutive viewing.

With Somos Animales Poéticos, Cristina Velásquez succeeded at both. From the start, these images captured my attention. Velásquez crafts layered compositions by combining her own photographs with personal family photos, drawings, and letters and historical documents and images. Quite noticeably, certain elements repeat—pineapples, snakes, flowers, draped materials, obscured features. This mix of elements builds curiosity. What do these symbols signify, as applied by Velásquez? The references are not necessarily clear, and that is part of the interest. Overall, the project invites and rewards repeat visitation.

Jared Ragland’s well-realized What Has Been Will Be Again examines American exceptionalism, specifically by traveling through all of Alabama’s 67 counties to “trace routes connected to brutal colonial legacies.” With photographs aided by text, he creates a sense of dis-ease, demonstrating that plenty is lurking, both below the surface and within full view.

Ariana Gomez’s My Mother Speaks of Land as Memory examines how we are intertwined with our ancestors through the land we inhabit, and what that means for those who have left their original homeland. Gomez visualizes a level of insecurity by effectively employing shadow, vanishing points, backs of figures, but also a singular portrait of her mother making direct eye contact” –Alyssa Ortega Coppelman

📍2011 Magazine St at 6pm

This artist talk explores themes of memory, land, documentation, and their intersection’s significance in our daily lives. Through conversation and displayed fine art film photography, the audience will gain a deeper understanding of what inspires the artist’s creative processes as well as the impact of inspirations all around.

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, B.Q. Williams focuses on candid street photography, architecture, and social justice using 35mm and 120mm film. He is known for developing and scanning his own film at home and for publishing his photo collection in the book Conduit.
