The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII veteran and dear friend Tolley Fletcher, who passed away Thursday at age 102. Fletcher was the last known surviving Louisiana veteran of the D-Day invasion of Normandy.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1924, Fletcher joined the US Navy at 17 years old, just weeks after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After boot camp, he trained as a Gunner’s Mate and was assigned to the USS New York (BB-34). In 1942, Fletcher participated in Operation Torch in North Africa, escorting convoys to Casablanca. In September 1943, he transferred to the submarine chaser SC-1301 aboard which he took part in the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. After D-Day, Fletcher spent time in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico hunting German U-boats. Fletcher was discharged from the Navy in October 1945 as a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class.

Fletcher frequently attended events at the Museum and gave a special toast at our 80th anniversary of D-Day celebration in 2024. He is featured in the Museum's interactive Voices from the Front experience. We are grateful for Mr. Fletcher's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with his family.

Our Educational Travel team and historians just wrapped a successful Masters of the Air: The Mighty Eighth over the Skies of Europe tour! Based on the book and Apple TV series by best-selling author and historian Donald L. Miller, this nine-day journey through England explores the storied WWII airfields that became headquarters for the American bomber crews who risked it all, flying and fighting to end the war. The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII veteran and dear friend Dr. John Chupinsky, who passed away recently at age 101.

Born in Wolfdale, Pennsylvania, in 1925, Chupinsky was drafted into the US Army in 1943. He served as a fire direction specialist in Company A, 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion. After a brief stay in England, he landed in Normandy across Utah Beach on June 29, 1944, and went into action supporting elements of the US VIII Corps. Over the next nine months, Chupinsky took part in combat operations in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. In April 1945, while supporting the 69th Infantry Division, Chupinsky's company was one of the first units to meet up with Soviet army infantry forces. By V-E Day, they had pushed all the way to the Czechoslovakian border. Following several months of occupation duty in Europe, he returned home in August 1945 and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He went on to practice dentistry for 35 years.

In 2024, Chupinsky traveled with the Museum to Normandy, France, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day and be honored alongside other WWII veterans. We are grateful for Dr. Chupinsky's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with his family.

The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII Rosie the Riveter and dear friend Dorothy Jane Nicholas, who passed away Thursday at age 103.

Nicholas was born in Myers, New York, in 1923. The eldest of four children, she began helping support her family after her father died when she was just 10 years old. After graduating from high school, Nicholas began looking for work and spotted a “help wanted” sign at Evaporated Metal Films in Ithaca, New York. In 1941, she became the first woman hired at the factory, where she polished prisms used in ri**es, tanks, and aircraft during World War II. After moving to California in 1944, Nicholas took a “temporary” job at Southern Pacific Railroad in San Francisco, where she went on to work for more than four decades.

In 2024, Rosie the Riveters of World War II were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, and Nicholas was among the Rosies honored with The National WWII Museum's American Spirit Award in 2026, given in recognition of the group’s invaluable contributions. We are grateful for Ms. Nicholas's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with her family.
