The Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

~ William Stafford, American poet and pacifist

Captured this on my walk this morning. Old Hickory Lake sunrise, March 11, 2025.

How do we cope in this season of unrelenting and unpredictable change where every day seems to bring new reasons for worry?

For me personally, art is an important tool for processing it all.

I’ve been inspired to create and offer an ALL-NEW 2 Day Workshop in Nashville, TN this summer!

Re-Mixing Mixed Media
Weathering The Storm
June 28-29

We will use abstract and mixed media art techniques to delve into creative self-expression as a means to explore, transform, and release anxiety and agitation.

In this workshop, we will be incorporating both group exercises and time for you to create your own work.

REGARDS by Jeff Tigchelaar

When you stay
home from work
Monday morning and sit
on the deck in the sun
with some tea and a book
creatures
come and investigate that s**t
because they know
you’re not supposed
to be there. A squirrel
applies the brakes atop the fence
having climbed the flip side not expecting
a monster to rise in his sights. A big bumbling bee
hovers like a chopper near your head
and you were going to swat him
but instead you laugh and wave
like a nut because you’re not
at your job and at times
it can be nice to be regarded.

Ukraine War Hits Close to Artist’s Heart

“You can say nothing and sit back and do nothing. Or you can use your gift and lean into it. I fully believe art is my gift for the world. It’s a way of communicating what words can’t.” – Wayne Brezinka

Brezinka is lost for words when he attempts to relay his feelings about the invasion of Ukraine, an issue that is close to his heart because of his ancestry. “I saw these devastating pictures of nothing,” he said. “Of ashtrays of land. How could you even begin to rebuild? I had no idea.”

Brezinka’s family comes from Poland. His great grandparents emigrated to the United States in 1892 and started a new life. Their son, John Walter Bre-zinka, was born in the U.S. in 1897. His family shares their name with a town in the southern part of the country - Brzezinka - the location of the Ausch-witz-Birkenau death camp.

“How important it is to honor the past, honor them,” Brezinka said. “Those who have gone before us. We can’t cut that part of ourselves off. They are always with you.”

Many thanks to reporter Molly Davis for her work.

Yesterday marked 22 years since the passing of Fred Rogers. Through his timeless work, he continues to remind us of the enduring power of love, kindness, compassion, and acceptance.

A poem by Robert Bly,
essayist and American poet

“Counting Small-boned Bodies”

If we could only make the bodies smaller
The size of skulls
We could make a whole plain white with skulls in the moonlight!

If we could only make the bodies smaller
Maybe we could get
A whole year’s kill in front of us on a desk!

If we could only make the bodies smaller
We could fit
A body into a finger-ring for a keepsake forever.

Russia’s army crossed the border on Feb. 24, 2022, in an all-out invasion that Putin sought to justify by falsely saying it was needed to protect Russian-speaking civilians in eastern Ukraine and prevent the country from joining NATO.

On Wednesday of this week, Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “ a dictator without elections” and said, “You’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it ... You should have never started it . . .”

How do you battle shameless and provable lies on this scale?

My Great-Grandparents (shown here in this gallery) immigrated from Brzezinka, Poland. My very name Brezinka (Brzezinka) is a village in southern Poland — site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau N**i death camp otherwise known as “Little Auschwitz” — a place of horrific war crimes.

As Ukrainian civilians continue to seek refuge from atrocities at home, a vast majority of refugees have been welcomed by Poland. Given my lineal descent, this tragedy is particularly close to my heart. As Ukrainians continue to fight bravely for freedom and democracy under the leadership of their president, Volodymyr Zelensky, my intent is for this work to serve viewers as a conduit to process outrage and grief, and to express support for the Ukrainian resistance.

This work was created in 2022 for a show entitled, FACING WAR. It is not available for sale. Tap link in bio to learn more.
