in 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law โ€” a policy that would alter the lives of thousands of Indigenous people across America

Although the idea of Indian Removal did not begin with Jackson and had been discussed by several presidents for decades, it was Jackson and his administration that pushed the policy forward. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 authorized the federal government to make treaties with Native American tribes that resulted in the forced removal of indigenous people from their ancestral lands to lands west of the Mississippi River.

Even at the time, many Americans viewed the policy as unjust. Members of Congress, religious missionaries, and citizens spoke out against what they believed was an act that could be easily manipulated through coercive treaties that violated the rights of native peoples.

Between 1838 and 1839, approximately 16,000 Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their homes in what became known as the Trail of Tears. Thousands endured harsh conditions, hunger, disease, and exhaustion during the journey west. An estimated 4,000 Cherokee men, women, and children died along the trail.

At Andrew Jacksonโ€™s Hermitage, we believe it is our responsibility to interpret and share this history honestly and thoughtfully. This site is not only a place to discuss Jacksonโ€™s legacy and accomplishments, but also the policies and actions that caused profound suffering and lasting consequences for Indigenous communities.

As we count down to an unforgettable night of bluegrass on June 12 at The Hermitage, meet one of the most electrifying bands redefining the genreโ€”๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—›๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„.

๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—›๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„ is known for pushing bluegrass far beyond its traditional boundaries. Inspired by legendary acts like the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival, Sicard Hollow blends fearless improvisation, explosive musicianship, and a skate-and-destroy spirit into a sound that feels both timeless and completely new.

Formed in 2018, the four-piece band came together from wildly different musical backgrounds. Violinist Matt Rennick was producing electronic music, Will Herrin was playing in rock bands, Alex King had nearly stepped away from music altogether, and after adding bassist Parrish Gabriel in 2019, the group fully embraced their mission of reinventing bluegrass on their own terms.

Their live shows have quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting acts on the bluegrass scene. Sicard Hollow has appeared at major festivals including Summer Camp Music Festival, The Peach Music Festival, Cave Fest, Resonance Music & Arts Festival, and more!

This is progressive bluegrass turned all the way upโ€”and you wonโ€™t want to miss them LIVE at The Hermitage on June 12!

A rare new addition to our collection ๐Ÿ‘€

This uncirculated 1996 $20 bill featuring Andrew Jackson is preserved in mint condition and encapsulated in archival-grade plastic for long-term protection. This $20 bill showcases a rare printing misprint often referred to as a โ€œtearโ€ beneath Jacksonโ€™s eye โ€” a subtle but striking production anomaly that transforms an everyday piece of currency.

Remarkably preserved and untouched by circulation, this piece highlights both pristine condition and an uncommon printing error, offering a fascinating look at how imperfections in currency production can become historically significant artifacts.

Now part of The Hermitage collection, this artifact invites a closer look at the unexpected details and hidden stories found within everyday American history.

in 1825, Marquis de Lafayetteโ€”Americaโ€™s โ€œFavorite Fighting Frenchmanโ€โ€”visited The Hermitage during his grand tour of the United States, which began in 1824.

By this time, Lafayette was being welcomed as The Nation's Guest, celebrated in every city he visited as he retraced the country he had helped secure nearly 50 years earlier.

After visiting Cumberland College, Lafayette, Jackson, and others made their way to The Hermitage. During his visit, Jackson asked Lafayette to verify the story behind a prized possessionโ€”a set of officerโ€™s pistols Lafayette had once presented to George Washington, later given to Jackson by a descendant of Washington.

After examining them closely, Lafayette recognized the pistols as the very pair he had presented to his โ€œpaternal friendโ€ Washington in 1778. He remarked that he felt great satisfaction in seeing them now โ€œin the hands of one so worthy of possessing them.โ€

At these words, Jacksonโ€”โ€œOld Hickoryโ€โ€”was visibly moved. With a modest blush and a spark in his eye, he pressed the pistols and Lafayetteโ€™s hands to his chest and replied, โ€œYes! I believe myself worthy of them, if not from what I have done, at least for what I wished to do for my country.โ€

That moment, shared here at The Hermitage 201 years ago today, reflects a powerful connection between generationsโ€”linking the legacy of the American Revolution to those who carried its spirit forward.
