200 years ago, the nation had reached a political climax surrounding the presidential election. Four candidates stood to gain the presidency: John Quincy Adams of
Massachusetts, Henry Clay of Kentucky, William Crawford of Georgia, and Andrew Jackson of Tennessee. The Marquis de Lafayetteā€™s 1824 Farewell Tour helped advance Jacksonā€™s chances slightly. The famous Frenchman reminded Americans of their past, fight for freedom and the ideals of the Revolution ā€“ a tie to which Jackson was the only candidate to. Americans still had their concerns about Jackson. He was a duelist, gambler, rough around the edges whose, as Robert Remini wrote, ā€œentire career seemed to contradict the most basic democratic processes for which this country stood.ā€ With each of the candidates representing a different portion of the nation, none would secure the necessary electoral votes to win, sending the election to the House of Representatives. Jackson, though, emerged with the most popular and electoral votes of the four, but in the end, the House declared the educated, more politically experienced, John Quincy Adams as the sixth president of the United States of America.

Itā€™s the month of love! ā¤ļø

In the early months of 1825, the Jacksons were in the nationā€™s capital, not only for Jackon to resume his duties as a Tennessee Senator - but to also learn the results of the 1824 presidential election. Despite all the political chaos surrounding Jackson, Rachel was glad to be with her husband, rather than being separated and remaining at The Hermitage. The couple lodged at Gadbyā€™s Tavern - the same boarding house the famous Marquis de Lafayette lodged. Washington also provided Rachel with the ability to go to church whenever she wanted. Itā€™s safe to say Rachel loved this visit!
