, September 4, 1901, Alfred Jackson passed away at about 90 years old. Born enslaved at The Hermitage, Alfred continued to work for the Jacksons after Emancipation; he lived on the property longer than any other person. He married Gracy Bradley, an enslaved woman at The Hermitage, in the late 1830s with whom he had two children, Sarah and Augustus. Alfred worked with the horses, as a farmer, and was the first tour guide after The Hermitage was turned into a museum/historic site by the Ladies’ Hermitage Association in 1889. His funeral was held in the mansion entrance hall, and he is buried in the garden just north of Jackson’s tomb. His cabin still stands on the grounds of The Hermitage.

Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage recently acquired this carving set as a gift from Penelope Reed Putnam. Mrs. Putnam’s husband, John, is a descendant of the Philadelphia Wetherill family related by marriage to Sarah Yorke Jackson. The carving set is comprised of a fork and a knife. The handle and rosette-styled end are understood to be made of deer antler. On the tip is a silver cap engraved with AJACKSON. Civilized dining from royal and the ultra-rich noble households filtered down to clergy, statesmen and middling folks across Europe by the 1400s. The art of carving meat and the implements required evolved as a part of this movement. By the 1800s, the custom developed for newly married couples to place a boxed set as the centerpiece of their wedding gift display. Perhaps this set was given to General Jackson or his son Andrew, Jr.

, August 24, 1894, Hannah Jackson passed away at nearly 100 years of age. Born into slavery around 1794, Hannah was purchased by Andrew Jackson when she was approximately 8 years old to be a helper and companion for his wife, Rachel. She married Aaron, the enslaved Hermitage blacksmith, with whom she had 10 children. Hannah became the head of the household enslaved, managing The Hermitage when the family moved to Mississippi in the 1850s. During the Civil War, in the summer of 1863, Hannah, her daughter Martha and three grandchildren emancipated themselves, leaving The Hermitage for Union occupied Nashville. Aaron and some of her other children appear to have joined her later. She worked in Nashville as a local midwife and a caretaker, passing away in 1894. She was buried in Mt. Ararat Cemetery.

Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage recently acquired this object personalized to “Andrew Jackson President of the United States” as embossed on the cover. The book, “The Church Harmony: Psalms and Hymn Tunes, …” was a gift to Jackson from the author Henry Smith. An inscription within says that Jackson gave the item to Augustus Price, a free African American working in the White House. Price then gifted it to his friend John Cook, a free African American Presbyterian clergyman in Washington, D.C.

, August 8th, 1863, seven months after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, Andrew Johnson, then Military Governor of Tennessee, freed those enslaved at his home in Greeneville, Tennessee. This act of emancipation led to August 8th becoming Emancipation Day, or Freedom Day, in Tennessee. Sam Johnson, a man formerly enslaved by Andrew Johnson, helped organize the first Emancipation Day celebration in 1871.

Today is ! Nellie Richards was a free black woman serving as pastry chef in the White House. Andrew Jackson purchased her sister Gracy in 1832 from William Hebb of Maryland. He then purchased sisters Louisa and Rachel, along with brother Peter and mother Nancy. It appears the enslaved stayed in Washington and worked at the White House until Jackson completed his second term as President and came home to Tennessee. Each of Nellie’s sisters married a fellow Hermitage enslaved: Gracy to Alfred Jackson, Louisa to Smith Williams and Rachel to John Fulton. The women held various household positions with the Jacksons as seamstress, personal and nursemaids. Members of this family are the only known enslaved individuals to join the Hermitage Presbyterian Church.

Andrew Jackson welcomed one of The Hermitage’s most well known visitors on May 5, 1825, the Marquis de Lafayette. A French military hero and leader who participated in the American Revolution, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the world-changing war and to experience the maturing United States. His “grand tour” included visits with former presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The future president’s dinner was held in the mansion.

65 years later, “The Lafayette chair” was the first item accessioned into the Andrew Jackson Foundation Collection in 1890. Lafayette’s grandson Edmund presented the bergère, a late 18th-century French Louis XVI-style fine furniture piece, noted to come from the chateau of Chevalier Lafayette in France’s Auvergne province.

During your tour of the site, you will get to see items connected to many different Jackson family members, including this veil belonging to Rachel Jackson. It was given to her by the Ladies of Cincinnati to wear at Jackson’s inauguration in March 1829, but Rachel died a little more than two months before the event. Jackson then gave it to his niece, Emily Donelson, who served as his White House hostess.

The veil, or possibly shoulder scarf, is made of embroidered tulle lace and features the name “JACKSON” beneath 24 stars (representing the 24 states at the time) and an olive branch. Each letter was created using a different floral pattern.
