The Mount Holly Historical Society began as a discussion at the Mount Holly Book Club, a group with a 50+ year history, and a desire to bring together those who are interested in preserving Mount Holly's past. Thanks to their initial efforts and the help of many other people in and around Mount Holly, the MHHS became a reality on August 6, 2010. Initially, a meeting was held with representatives o

f the City of Mount Holly, and with their encouragement for the Society to become caretakers of the City's archives, the MHHS was formed. Since then our membership has grown to 100+ members and many friends who want to learn more about our local history and to help us begin "Understanding our Past, Today!"

Monthly meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday at our headquarters located in the former City Hall building at 131 S. Holly, NC 28120. Meetings are free and open MHHS members, guests, and to the public. Typical meeting format begins with a short business session and announcements followed by an interesting historical program and light refreshments and fellowship. Historical exhibits are on display before and after the meeting for meeting attendees to enjoy. The MHHS is also open for visitors every Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM, by appointment, and during downtown Mount Holly events. We welcome your visit!

The Mount Holly Historical Society had their Annual Membership meeting this week. We had an awesome time hearing about all the wonderful events, programs, and activities that the MHHS members have participated in throughout the past year. What a busy group!

We would like to introduce you to our new board members that were voted in at the meeting. We are so excited to have them and and their talents. They will be a great asset to the board.

L-R Melanie Rhyne Harte has lived most of her life in Mount Holly. She is an EGHS and Gaston College graduate. She has worked in the medical field for 32 years, currently employed at Piedmont Plastic Surgery and Dermatology. She has served on several committees and boards in our community. Her roots run deep as she is a Rhyne descendent, Daniel and A. P. Rhyne who started the first cotton mills in Mount Holly. Her love for her hometown and family heritage is the reason why she is a devoted citizen and wants to be a part of the MHHS.

Clyde Holland is a graduate of Edison State University, Trenton, NJ. He was an educator, certified to teach 4-12, taught all subjects in both Christian and Public Education. He is a member of the Gaston County Historical Society, serving as Vice President. He also has helped people all over the country with their research on the Battle of Kings Mountain, Tryon County, and the colonial and Revolutionary War.

Maria Boyer is so excited to be joining her Mount Holly friends and neighbors with the Historical Society. She lives in the Runnymeade neighborhood and enjoys many of the community events and restaurants downtown. She currently works in health administration. She previously worked in education and also holds an MBA. She is looking forward to learning more about the city and its history.

The Mount Holly Historical Society had the opportunity to attend the First Baptist Church Mount Holly Community Senior Lunch to talk about our history museum. We also shared the interesting history of 3 men, their accomplishments and legacy that gave us a better understanding of who we are and how our community became what it is today---Ransom Hunter, Charles E. Hutchison, Washington Freno Holland, Jr.

There were approximately 80 Seniors that enjoyed a great lunch and lots of fellowship with each other. We were honored to be a part of this event.

Look who visited the MHHS Museum today! A sweet Senior Group from Williams Place, Gracious Retirement Living in Davidson, NC just dropped in for a visit. Now they’re on their way for lunch in downtown Mount Holly. They have an awesome Activity Coordinator, Jania Warren who brought them on their bus. They were a delight to meet and talk with them about Mount Holly. They were anxious to get to lunch so they jumped on the bus before I could get their picture. So I just jumped on with them.

If you have a group that would like to visit the museum for a guided tour, just give the Mount Holly Historical Society a call.

Virginia Hoffman,

This is a picture of my Mama Hazel Herms Fortenberry born in 1911 and her brother Edgar Born in 1914 when they were living on Cramerton Mill Village in 1918 during the flu pandemic. She said people were sick and dying everywhere. They moved there when their house washed away at Mount Island in 1916, all they were able to save was her mom's sewing machine. They went to their grandpa's house Dutch Herms on Herms Avenue in Mount Holly. She said you could stand on his porch, see houses floating down the river with people on top hollering for help.
