Historic Rosedale preserves and shares the stories of all the people who lived and labored in the house and on the land dating back to 1815. Admission is $5.

Historic 1815 house and grounds which includes gardens and recreated blacksmith shop. Historic Rosedale shares the story of the free and enslaved families who lived and labored here. Open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and most Saturdays. Additional fee for guided tours of house. Come bring the family and perhaps even a picnic lunch! It's the start of September, and Historic Rosedale is excited to offer two engaging events coming up this month! On Thursday, September 10th, join us for a panel discussion on our current exhibit "Love of Liberty: The Revolutionary Spirit of Rosedale," featuring a close-up look at the exhibit at 6:00 pm, followed by speakers and light refreshments starting at 6:30. This event is FREE, but spaces are limited, and registration is recommended. Co-hosted by the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society (CAPS) and Great State Paranormal the event features a full day of family-friendly activities celebrating the Carolinas’ spirited side — all while supporting the preservation of Rosedale’s 200-year-old house and grounds. For today’s Staff/Volunteer Spotlight, we would like to recognize our resident beekeeper, Amanda Mullen! Amanda became a beekeeper in 2020 and earned her NC Beekeeper’s Certification in 2024. She moved her hives to Rosedale in 2023, where she visits regularly to tend to the hives and extract honey that’s sold in Rosedale’s gift shop. As Amanda tells us, “The bees absolutely LOVE the gardens here at Rosedale and produce an average of about 20 gallons of honey every year!”

Join us for a very special dedication event of the African American Legacy Memorial Garden. With significant new features, including new exhibits, interpretive signage, plantings, and more, the Memorial Garden is an essential aspect of Rosedale. The event will feature guest speakers and mini-tours that highlight the important work taking place at Rosedale and explain the various connections throughout the garden. Our staff and volunteers at Rosedale are constantly researching to learn more about those who lived and worked on the site. Recently, blacksmith Marty Foil helped solve a mystery about another of Rosedale's blacksmiths, a formerly enslaved craftsman named George Caldwell. George had been born enslaved at Rosedale, the grandson of blacksmith Nat Caldwell and his common-law wife Agness (family stories indicate he may possibly have been the son of Rosedale owner Dr. Caldwell or perhaps of one of Dr. Caldwell's sons). He would have been quite a young man when Emancipation was declared but was likely already a highly skilled blacksmith. Following Emancipation he became a successful entrepreneur in Charlotte with blacksmith shops of his own. As Marty put it:

"We all knew from oral history etc that George had a second shop located in the Myers Park area. His first house & shop were located at 1006/1007 [N Tryon St]. Our records indicated Providence Rd (but no address) and a reference to the 1923 City Directory. I found that directory online and was able to find him listed at 1000 Providence Rd...That is currently the site of the Myers Park Methodist Church, which broke ground in 1929."

As part of our ongoing Staff/Volunteer Spotlight, we want to take a moment and recognize one of our volunteer docents and resident blacksmith, Gene Pease!

My name is Gene Pease, I’ve lived in Charlotte since 1993 and I’ve been a Rosedale volunteer for a little more than 1 year. I am both a docent and one of the blacksmiths. For years I passed by Rosedale not knowing it was there, then one weekend I attended a craft fair and was instantly attracted to the place. After retirement, I found that volunteering filled two of my interests; history and blacksmithing.

I enjoy leading tours through the house and relating the fascinating history Rosedale holds. In addition, I get to share the rich history of the Rosedale blacksmith shop while also sharing with guests my enjoyment in the craft.

I recieve much satisfaction from witnessing visitors' reactions to the house and its diverse history, and also seeing how our guests are amazed at who the original Rosedale blacksmiths were and the craft that continues to this day."

🍂 Shadows of September: A Rosedale Paranormal Festival 👻 Summer may still linger, but fall — and the spirited season — is on its way. Join us Saturday, September 26 for our first‑ever paranormal festival, just in time for National Ghost Hunting Day!

To that end, we want to take a few moments to recognize their hard work and dedication in our twice-monthly Staff/Volunteer Spotlight! Introducing today's volunteer, our Head Blacksmith Martin Foil:

"Hey! I'm Marty Foil, Concord native and a member of the Rosedale Blacksmith Team since Dec of 2023! Currently I am serving as the lead blacksmith, helping to schedule all of our smiths to maximize the Rosedale guest experience and keep the blacksmith shop stocked and running smoothly. I've been a blacksmith for almost 12 years and really enjoy teaching guests about the enslaved smiths of Rosedale and the impact they had across the broader Mecklenburg community as well as demonstrating the craft of 19th century blacksmithing. Come visit me at the forge sometime! Happy to discuss the history of our Rosedale smiths, the role of blacksmiths in the 19th century community, blacksmithing in general or anything that comes to mind! The forge is a fun place to hang out and chat!"
