In honor of Black History Month, today we remember Naomi Drenan. ❤️

Drenan (1897-2001) was a community activist, founding member of Grier Heights Presbyterian Church, and chairwoman of the neighborhood voting district board for 25 years, where she cultivated voter engagement in a climate of voter suppression. Today, a Mecklenburg County Recreation Center is named for her in honor of her efforts to build a park in Grier Heights for its children.

In 1892, when freedman Sam Billings (1853-1933), purchased 50 acres of land in Sharon Township, just two miles outside of Charlotte, he laid the foundation of Billingsville, one of Charlotte’s first independent black communities.

By 1920, the area was a thriving village of black farmers, craftspeople, and business owners. People named the village Billingsville out of respect for Billings, a man who demonstrated the values of faith, hard work, generosity, and entrepreneurial spirit that were central to the community’s cohesion and success.

Learn more about Sam Billings and the Grier Heights community at our open house celebration on Feb. 17. View our traveling exhibition, Grier Heights: Family is Community, listen to engaging interviews, and more!
