Marketing in museums is more than promotion. It is how we tell our story.

In the latest issue of Museum magazine, AAM President & CEO Marilyn Jackson reflects on why public relations and marketing have become central to museum leadership.

At a time of funding uncertainty, political pressure, staffing challenges, and growing questions about the role of museums, clear storytelling matters more than ever.

Museums are not optional amenities. They are essential institutions that contribute to education, workforce development, civic trust, economic vitality, and stronger communities.

This priority is also central to AAM’s 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, including our commitment to building a stronger national narrative about the value of museums.

As Marilyn writes, if we do not tell our story, someone else will.
