Welcome back, Sharks!

After an active summer, we are thrilled to welcome back MDC students for the fall semester. MDC students, staff, and faculty receive free admission at the Freedom Tower. Drop by before, after, or in-between classes. Enjoy these photos from a special class visit from MDC students last term. This curated tour called “The Art of Care” welcomed MDC Medical Campus students for a visit to all four exhibitions and concluded with a special art making activity in the Knight Skylight Gallery.

*Join us for a photography workshop this Saturday at the Freedom Tower led by Matias J. Ocner*

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Miami, Matias J. Oner, a staff photojournalist for the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, has occupied a front-row seat to history, documenting pivotal events through his photography. His coverage spans natural disasters, immigration, protest movements, sporting events, and more. As a team member covering the collapse of Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, his impactful images contributed to work that earned the newsroom the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting.

Ocner’s photographs are on view in the installation “Journeys of Freedom” in the Libertad exhibition at the Freedom Tower.

Join us this Saturday from 5 to 7pm for an opportunity to meet with Matias Ocner and learn about his approach to photography. Participants will meet at the Freedom Tower and walk around downtown with the photographer making pictures side by side.

Today, we share photos of one of our oral history participants, Gladys Gómez-Rossié, one of five Cuban American women to found the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) at the University of Miami. The CHC is a critical partner for the Freedom Tower’s exhibition, “Libertad.” Gómez-Rossié’s voice can be heard in “El Refugio in Context” and these images of her childhood in Cuba are accesible vía the Pedro Pan interactive. Gómez-Rossié came to the US at age 14 as an unaccompanied minor through Operation Pedro Pan.

Photographs that shape memories abound in the Freedom Tower Archive. These cherished family photos from Havana, Cuba were shared by our oral history participant Julian Asion. These images help us learn more about his life in Cuba before he came to the U.S. Collecting beloved digital images from our community allow us to understand the influences and experiences that define our region. We are grateful to Julian and our many oral history participants for their willingness to share their stories. Would you like to share photos with us for the Freedom Tower Archive? Email us at [email protected] and share digital images of your family with captions for our digital archive.
