"Inspired by both a general sense of loss and hope that is personal to us, ['Unspecified Promise'] explores how the United States' policies toward the Hispanic Caribbean Islands of Puerto Rico and Cuba have impacted the social, economic, and political realities in the region and for members of its diaspora, many of whom reside in Miami." —

We're celebrating with a spotlight on Allora & Calzadilla's "Unspecified Promise" (2017), part of ICA Miami’s permanent collection. Jennifer Allora (b.1974, Philadelphia) and Guillermo Calzadilla (b.1971, Havana) work collaboratively across sculpture, performance, installation, and more. Here, more than thirty tons of black granite form an incomplete symmetry with half of a construction loader, while the mirror-like polished surface reflects the missing half, creating the illusion of a whole. The sculpture invokes a complex social matrix, turning the massive machines that power our lives, industries, and militaries into something both sublime and surreal.

How many of these movies can you name? 📽️ Harmony Korine began collecting deadstock VHS tapes in the early 2000s, drawing on the extensive time he spent in movie rental shops. He then repurposed or painted over them, as seen in this work, emphasizing that each carried its own narrative and graphic identity, both personal and collective.

Harmony Korine has drawn inspiration from music, film, and underground culture to celebrate figures at the edges of mainstream visibility. In this series, he drew on the visual language of black metal, particularly the Scandinavian scene of the 1990s, to study subculture and constructed identity.

Korine primarily rephotographed images from early AOL message boards, often featuring figures in exaggerated makeup, costuming, and gestures that function as visual codes of identity, alienation, and performance.

“The paintings, as I was making them, wore heavy make-up and looked straight to the audience (me), confronting art history, perceived certainties, and homophobia head-on. Somehow, the eyes of everyone I meet are tattooed on mine. Referencing the eponymous gallery I founded in 2012, ‘CENTRAL FINE (self portrait)’ is informed by action painting, minimalism, glam rock, queerness, and so on.” —

We're celebrating with a spotlight on Diego Singh’s “CENTRAL FINE (self portrait)” (2020). Singh (b.1976, Salta, Argentina) began this series of self-portraits in 2004, using imagined, genderless faces that, by remaining generic, resist definitions. The work is part of ICA Miami's permanent collection and was featured in the museum's first major collection exhibition, “Fire Figure Fantasy” (2022).

Introducing I Create Art, a new series for children ages 6 and up and their adults to participate in together! ✨ 🎨

Meet an artist whose work is in ICA Miami’s collection or of special interest to the museum, learn about their practice, and create art side by side. Through conversation and experimentation, the series encourages curiosity, creativity, and connection across generations.

The series kicks off with artist Amani Lewis this Sunday, October 11, at 11 AM. Inspired by Lewis’s process, families will create a mixed-media collage painting, moving from photographing a subject to transforming the images through collage, developing color, and layering paint and materials.

Experience hands-on art-making for families at ICA Miami. Meet contemporary artists, create together, and enjoy lunch in the Sculpture Garden.

Recent Acquisition ✨ Oscar Murillo (b.1986, La Paz, Colombia) creates layered, gestural works that explore cultural exchange and the circulation of people, ideas, and goods across a globalized world.

Created largely while Murillo was a student at the Royal College of Art in London, his “Drawings off the Wall” series pairs loose, scrawled marks with fragments of everyday words, such as food names. In this work, the word “tacos” becomes a symbol of how culture travels and transforms across borders. Left on the studio floor between sessions, the canvases absorbed debris, capturing the making process alongside the artist's memories and references.

“My studio is a cradle of dust and dirt, of pollution. I don’t tidy up at the end of each production process… it’s about letting things mature on their own—like aging cheese or letting a stew cook, they get more flavorful. That’s kind of how these paintings are made.” —
