The Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection (JCMC) focuses on the study and the recognition of Geometric Abstraction as a fundamental artistic language for the development of contemporary art history.

06/01/2026

As the Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection looks ahead to new projects, challenges, and opportunities, we would like to pause to reflect on the closing of Urban Forms.

Over the course of 165 days, from December 3, 2025, through May 16, 2026, nearly 1,300 visitors joined us in exploring the work of Paolo Gasparini and the visual dialogues that connect modern architecture and geometric abstraction. Through images documenting some of the most significant architectural developments in Brazil and Venezuela, the exhibition invited us to consider the many points of contact between architectural experience and pictorial practice throughout the twentieth century.

To everyone who visited, attended our programs, shared conversations, and helped bring these ideas to life: thank you! Featured in this post are only a few of those many visitors.

Stay tuned for what comes next as we continue to share exhibitions and educational content in support of our mission: to foster the study and appreciation of Geometric Abstraction as a universal artistic movement that transcends geographies, cultures, and generations.

Last three days to visit ‘Urban Forms!’
It is closing this Saturday, May 16, 2026.

In this pairing, Ariel Jiménez highlights the affinity between geometric abstraction and the language of modern architecture, as evidenced by the use of vertical and horizontal lines in both Carlos Cairoli’s work and Raúl Villanueva’s architecture.

There are only three days left to visit the ‘Urban Forms’ exhibition, closing this Thursday, April 30th, 2026.

In this video, Ariel Jiménez highlights a work by Theo van Doesburg as one of the Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection’s most emblematic pieces, and he goes on to explain the two reasons why:

1. It is one of the earliest manifestations of the modern spirit within the collection.

2. It is a piece in which the notion of dynamic equilibrium, one of the central principles of geometric abstraction and Western modern art, is exemplarily realized.

This week, you can visit ‘Urban Forms’ before it ends, Tuesday to Thursday, 10:30 am to 5 pm.

‘Urban Forms’ will be on view until Thursday, April 30th, 2026. There are just three weeks left to visit the show!

In this pairing, Ariel Jiménez highlights how the juxtaposition of a work by Lygia Pape and a photograph by Paolo Gasparini reveals striking affinities of visual language: the imprint of wood in Pape’s woodcut echoes the wooden formwork marks in Affonso Reidy’s Museum of Modern Art building in Rio de Janeiro.

In this pairing, Ariel Jiménez highlights Paolo Gasparini’s ability to capture the spatial essence of architecture in his photographs, skillfully using the interplay of light and shadow, an effect the architect himself employs with remarkable intelligence.
