In 2024, the Collection entered a new phase of international engagement while continuing to expand its scope.

Following the close of “The Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection in Time”, “Secret Affinities / Aesthetics of Two Worlds” opened at JCMC, continuing our exploration of the unexpected relationships between modern and Indigenous artistic traditions.

That same year, “Convergencias / Divergencias” traveled to Casa de América in Madrid, marking the Collection’s first exhibition in Europe. Bringing together works from the Collection alongside Ye’kwana basketry, the exhibition introduced new international audiences to the dialogues between geometric abstraction and Indigenous knowledge systems that have become central to JCMC’s research.

In 2024, the Collection also broadened its holdings through the acquisition of Pre-Columbian ceramics and textiles from the Nazca (Early, Intermediate, and Late Periods, c. 100 BCE–700 CE), Tiwanaku (c. 400–1000 CE), Wari (Middle Horizon, c. 600–1000 CE), and Inca civilizations. These acquisitions expanded the Collection’s scope to encompass the study of Indigenous art, knowledge systems, and material culture from across Latin America alongside its longstanding focus on geometric abstraction.

During Art Basel Miami Beach, JCMC once again opened its doors to the international art community, hosting a series of visits and brunches that welcomed collectors, curators, scholars, and friends of the Collection, reaffirming the space’s role as a place for exchange and conversation.

As the Collection’s ideas and artworks continued to circulate internationally, this chapter reflected a growing commitment to collaboration, scholarship, and cultural exchange beyond our own exhibition space.

In 2023, the Collection’s reach extended across the Atlantic while offering an opportunity to reflect on its own journey.

Three works by Gego traveled to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum for “Gego: Measuring Infinity,” while works by María Freire and Mathias Goeritz were included in “Antes de América” at Fundación Juan March in Madrid, bringing key works from the Collection into two major international exhibitions.

Closer to home, “The Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection in Time: The Rigor of Geometric Shapes” invited visitors to revisit the Collection through the vision of its founder, tracing the ideas, artists, and acquisitions that have shaped JCMC over the years.

The exhibition was accompanied by a rich public program that included guided visits, conversations, and “JCMC & Unboxed Musicians,” a multidisciplinary collaboration that brought together music, art, and space through a specially curated concert and the premiere of a newly commissioned musical composition. The exhibition was further documented through a catalogue and a published conversation between Juan Carlos Maldonado and curator Ariel Jiménez, reflecting on the Collection’s evolution and future.

That same year, the Collection was enriched by the generous donation of the Stephen Baker Ye’kwana Collection and Archives, further strengthening JCMC’s commitment to the study and preservation of Indigenous knowledge systems and expanding the archival resources available for future research. This important gift complemented the Collection’s growing focus on the Ye’kwana and their material culture.

In 2022, the Collection turned its full attention to the Ye’kwana. Following the close of “Poetics of Exactness,” “The Ye’kwana Universe: Living in the Middle of the Jungle” opened in November, presenting the Collection’s Ye’kwana objects in an exhibition devoted entirely to their material culture, knowledge systems, and cosmology.

Rather than placing these works in dialogue with modern abstraction, the exhibition invited visitors to encounter the Ye’kwana universe on its own terms, revealing the profound relationships between making, community, and the natural world. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanied the exhibition, extending this research beyond the gallery.

The exhibition was complemented by a robust public program that included guided visits and conversations such as “The Ye’kwana Universe” gallery talk, the lecture “Cosmovisión indígena y sobrevivencia planetaria,” and “Inside the Music: Sounds of the Earth” at the New World Centre, an interdisciplinary program exploring the relationships between Indigenous worldviews, sound, and contemporary culture.

In 2021, the Collection presented two major exhibitions that expanded the conversations
surrounding Latin American geometric abstraction.

During the summer, “Signs, Abstractions and Metaphors: Latin American Art at the JCMC”, curated by Ariel Jiménez, explored the many ways artists across the region transformed abstraction into a language of cultural identity, experimentation, and exchange.

That November, “Poetics of Exactness”, also curated by Ariel Jiménez, turned to a more intimate question: how precision, structure, and measured form can evoke emotion, perception, and poetic experience.

Both exhibitions were accompanied by fully illustrated catalogues, continuing JCMC’s commitment to research and publishing. They were also complemented by a robust educational program that included guided visits, art talks, and public conversations, further fostering dialogue around the Collection’s ideas and exhibitions.

In 2020, while much of the world slowed down, the Collection’s commitment to scholarship continued. Following the close of “Hybridizations / Contemporary Strategies”, we dedicated the year’s final exhibition to the work of Cuban artist Ernesto Briel.

“Ernesto Briel: Iridescent Geometries”, curated by Ariel Jiménez, brought renewed attention to Briel’s explorations of optics and perception, highlighting his important contribution to the history of geometric abstraction. Accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, the exhibition advanced new research on an artist whose work deserves broader recognition.

In 2019, the Collection’s commitment to research took center stage. We published “Ye’kwana Basketry Symbology: Portal to a Parallel World” by Charles Brewer-Carías, an in-depth study exploring how the Ye’kwana people encode cosmology, knowledge, and memory through the geometric language of basketry.

As “Convergences / Divergences” completed its run, “Hybridizations / Contemporary Strategies” opened in December. Curated by Ariel Jiménez, the exhibition examined how contemporary artists reinterpret and transform the language of geometric abstraction through new materials, ideas, and cultural perspectives. The exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, continuing JCMC’s growing publishing program.

That year, the Collection was also included in the official Art Basel Miami Beach program, welcoming visitors to JCMC for a special brunch and further establishing the Collection as an active participant in Miami’s cultural landscape and international art week.

In 2018, the Collection’s vision expanded in a new direction. The acquisition of the Charles Brewer-Carías Collection of Ye’kwana artifacts brought one of the most significant ensembles of Indigenous material culture from the Venezuelan Amazon into JCMC, opening new avenues for dialogue between ancestral knowledge systems and modern geometric abstraction.

That November, “Convergences / Divergences: Primitive Sources of the Modern,” curated by Ariel Jiménez, made these connections visible for the first time. Through works from the Collection and Ye’kwana objects, the exhibition explored shared visual languages, structures, and ideas that transcend conventional distinctions between Indigenous and modern art. The project was accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Throughout the year, JCMC expanded its educational programming through guided visits, public conversations, and art talks, including “Las Estructuras de Gego,” a lecture dedicated to the pioneering Venezuelan artist’s investigations of line, structure, and space. Today, the lecture remains freely available through JCMC’s Learning Channel, reflecting the Collection’s ongoing commitment to making research and scholarship accessible beyond the gallery walls.

Ten years ago, we opened our doors in Miami’s Design District with “The Unbounded Line”, our inaugural exhibition curated by Carlota Perez-Appelbaum. Bringing together more than fifty works, the exhibition traced the evolution of the line across geographies, generations, and artistic movements, establishing the Collection’s commitment to scholarship and public engagement.

That same year, the Collection reached two of the country’s leading museums. Carmen Herrera’s Untitled (1948) traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art for “Lines of Sight’, while Jesús Rafael Soto’s “Penetrable BBL Bleu” began its long-term installation at Pérez Art Museum Miami—the museum’s first work by Soto.

The publication of our first exhibition catalogue marked the beginning of a decade-long commitment to research and publishing, documenting the ideas, artists, and dialogues that continue to shape the Collection today.

As we look toward a new chapter, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the journey that brought us here.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll revisit ten years of exhibitions, acquisitions, research, publications, loans, collaborations, and conversations that helped shape the Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection in Miami’s cultural landscape.

This year marks ten years of exhibitions, research, and cultural initiatives in Miami’s Design District by the Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection, building upon more than twenty-five years of collecting, studying, and championing the art and ideas represented in its holdings.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are excited to announce a new chapter. While our physical exhibition space closes, our commitment to supporting research, exhibitions, publications, and cultural exchange continues to grow.

As we share this news, we do so mindful of the difficult moment facing Venezuela. We extend our continued solidarity to all those affected by the recent earthquakes and reaffirm our enduring commitment to preserving and celebrating the cultural heritage of Venezuela and Latin America.
