Beauty and violence remain close in Billy Maloney’s monotypes. Working with a palette knife, he pulls ink into sweeping bands, creating images in which faces and bodies seem to form and fracture within the marks.

A vivid yellow ground sets a dense gathering of figures in sharp relief. Faces emerge from the dark marks, then nearly disappear back into them, each person distinct yet inseparable from the crowd.

Drawing on history, mythology and dreams, Maloney lets memories and subconscious associations guide each composition. Immigration, oppression and the struggle to determine one’s own fate run through these works, taking shape through an intuitive process rather than a predetermined narrative.

Devon Stackonis’s(Devon Stackonis) prints give abandoned industrial structures a stark, almost theatrical presence. Her Mezzotints examine what industry leaves behind. Water towers rise from folded, fractured terrain, their pale surfaces and slender supports exposed against deep black.

The work draws on a family history of coal mining in Pennsylvania and an ongoing engagement with Poland’s industrial landscapes. Abandoned structures carry the legacy of extraction, while flooding and a changing climate expose the fragility of systems built to contain and control water.

That history also informs the making. Working in mezzotint, Stackonis roughens a plate, then gradually scrapes it back to develop the image. Light emerges through the removal of material, giving the act of extraction a direct presence in each print.

Bruno Nadalin’s (bruno nadalin )prints give physical form to unease. Bodies fold inward, limbs stretch across darkened space and an enlarged face holds the viewer’s gaze amid a crowd of grinning figures.

Fine contours, dense crosshatching and textured fields of ink intensify the tension of each scene. Exaggerated proportions and guarded gestures suggest vulnerability, while the figures’ expressions introduce a dark, sometimes comic edge. Their relationships remain ambiguous, inviting a closer look at who is watching, who is exposed and who is withdrawing.

Based in Jersey City, Nadalin is an artist and printmaker who also directs the JC Print Room.

Arlene Farenci’s (Arlene Grobman Farenci)watercolor monotypes are full of movement. Broad curves of color cross translucent washes and finely mottled textures, while the white of the paper opens spaces between the marks.
Two of the works draw on the colors, foliage and water of her visit to the Dominican Republic. The third grew from the anticipation of a trip to Umbria and the prospect of seeing Fra Angelico’s paintings, whose palette she admires.
Farenci welcomes uncertainty in the process. Water and pigment pool, bead and shift as they move from plexiglass to paper, allowing each image to take shape through the medium’s unpredictable flow.

Gallery Makowski is pleased to present In the Wake of a Mark, a group exhibition featuring Arlene Farenci, Billy Maloney, Bruno Nadalin, Devon Stackonis, Eileen Ferara, Ellen Peckham, Kirsten Flaherty, Kristy Caldwell, Linda Mead, Osmeli Delgado, Rie Hasegawa and Russ Spitkovsky.

Printmaking anchors the exhibition, from monotype and block printing to lithography and intaglio. Alongside these are oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings and works incorporating drawing, collage and handmade paper. The title asks what follows a mark: the trace of its making and the changes or memories it leaves behind. Across these works, marks record the movement of a hand or tool. They can also point to less immediate histories: labor, altered habitats, memory and loss.

In printmaking, a mark made on one surface can arrive on another through contact and pressure, sometimes changing along the way. Across the exhibition, works retain evidence of how they were made: a stroke repeated, a fragment layered, color allowed to spread.

The exhibition brings together twelve artists working in printmaking, painting and mixed media. Their work carries traces of how it was made and of the lives and places that shaped it.
