The Madison Historical Society extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us on June 13 for the Bicentennial & Flag Day Commemoration. This event provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our shared history, honor those who have shaped our community, and, as Madison celebrates its 200 years of incorporation, look ahead to a bright future.

We are deeply grateful to our partners the Town of Madison and the Madison 200 | America 250 Steering Committee for their collaboration and support. We also thank our sponsors, veterans, musicians, speakers, volunteers, and program participants whose contributions helped to make the event a success.

Most importantly, thank you to the community members who attended the event and continue to support local history and civic engagement. Your enthusiasm and participation help ensure that Madison’s stories, traditions, and heritage remain vibrant for future generations.

Final preparations in progress! MHS Executive Director, Alex Gerrish, is hard at work making sure everything is ready for tomorrow’s Bicentennial & Flag Day Commemoration at the historic Lee’s Academy, 14 Meeting House Lane.

This free community event will honor Madison’s rich heritage and commemorate both the bicentennial & Flag Day through a program that blends history and community spirit. Organized in collaboration with the Madison 200 | America 250 Steering Committee, the event will pay tribute to Madison’s past while celebrating the people, places, and stories that continue to shape our community.

Following the program, guests are invited inside the Madison Center for History & Culture at Lee’s Academy to enjoy refreshments and an historic flag display.

The Madison Historical Society is grateful for the generous financial support of The Madison Foundation and The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Plan a visit to the historic Allis-Bushnell House Museum today to explore the latest exhibit, “A Town Named Madison: Celebrating 200 Years.” This Madison 200 exhibit highlights the individuals who have shaped our community through photography, poetry, philanthropy, and the arts.

Among the featured individuals is local artist and celebrated muralist , who is currently creating a mural at the Surf Club in celebration of Madison’s 200th anniversary of incorporation.

The Allis-Bushnell House will be open on Saturday, June 6 from 11 am to 1 pm. Admission is free of charge.

Preparations are underway for the Bicentennial & Flag Day Commemoration at the historic Lee’s Academy schoolhouse. Thanks to the generosity of Iselin Tree Experts and , the flagpole has received a fresh coat of paint and will be ready to fly the flag of 1826 on Saturday, June 13 at 11 am.

The Bicentennial & Flag Day Commemoration is presented in partnership with the Town’s Madison 200 Steering Committee.

A special thank you to Finley Chapman, who completed their internship at the MHS yesterday. Over the past year, Finley catalogued the library at Lee’s Academy, trained a new volunteer to continue the work, and created a comprehensive user manual and guide to support future efforts.

We are deeply grateful for Finley’s dedication, hard work, and lasting contributions and wish him continued success.

Congratulations to Thomas E. Boyle, Chair of the Historic District Commission, on receiving the Jane R. Kuhl Award for Historic Preservation that was presented at the Annual Meeting last night.

Tom was recognized for his outstanding leadership and service to the Town’s Historic District Commission, as well as for the vision and perseverance that led to the establishment of the Old Elm Street Local Historic District, a landmark preservation achievement in Madison.
