Founded in 1917, the Madison Historical Society is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that preserves and protects objects on behalf of the town's residents.

Our administrative offices, located on the upper level of the Lee Academy at 14 Meeting House Lane, can be reached year-round. The regular office hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. First Floor Exhibit is open Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. April through November.

Join us for the final History Happy Hour of 2026 at the historic Allis-Bushnell House museum on Friday, October 23 at 6 pm.

Artist and muralist will present a behind-the-scenes look at his work, creative process, and the recently completed Surf Club mural. Featured in our A Town Named Madison: Celebrating 200 Years exhibit, Patrick will share his journey as an artist and the inspiration behind his work.

Reserve your seats at madisonhistory.org/events. Tickets are $15 for general admittance and $10 for MHS members.

Refreshments will be served. Doors open at 5:30 pm.

Visit the Allis-Bushnell House and Lee’s Academy on Saturday, October 3 and explore the Madison 200 exhibits, “A Town Named Madison: Celebrating 200 Years,” during their final weeks.

The Allis-Bushnell House museum, located at 853 Boston Post Road, will be open from 11 am to 1 pm, while Lee’s Academy, 14 Meeting House Lane, will be open from 12 pm to 3 pm. Admission to both locations is free of charge.

Visitors to Lee’s Academy can also enjoy the final weekend of the pop-up exhibits “West Wharf: From Working Waterfront to Town Treasure” and “A Legacy of Hospitality: Madison Beach Hotel.”

Come explore Madison’s history, celebrate 200 years, and discover the stories that helped shape our community. We hope to see you there!

A Nor’easter couldn’t stop MHS members and guests from turning out for Murder Mystery, an engaging and informative presentation by Charlie Shafer!

Guests were treated to the history of two notorious local murder cases from the 1800s, including the infamous Mary Stannard case and the lesser-known Collier murder. A special thank you to Charlie Shafer for bringing these pieces of local history to life!

Couldn’t make the September History Happy Hour? Tickets are now available for October’s History Happy Hour, The Creative Evolution of a Mural Artist presented by Patrick Ganino.

New Historical Fiction Book Group Invites Participants

The Madison Historical Society is pleased to offer a new book group focused on historical fiction. The group will meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 4 pm in the Madison Center for History & Culture at Lee’s Academy.

The introductory meeting on Tuesday, October 6 will feature an open discussion of suggestions for future sessions. Participants will then select the November book and nominate titles for the following six months. Light refreshments will be served.

Space will be limited to 20 participants. Please email the MHS office at [email protected] by October 2 to reserve your spot.

Join us this Friday, September 25 for History Happy Hour at the historic Allis-Bushnell House Museum presented by Charlie Shafer from Madison Land Conservation Trust.

Children of all ages are welcome to visit the Allis-Bushnell House Museum this Saturday, September 19 to pick up a free colonial-era craft.

Immigrant children of the colonial era played with handmade wooden and textile toys made from natural materials they found around them. Our current craft projects include a whirligig spinning toy and decorative paper art kits. All projects are available at no charge.

Crafts are also available at Lee’s Academy during open hours, Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 2 pm, or whenever you see the OPEN flag.
