Rando Aso: Earthscape
September 12 - October 24, 2026

Opening: Saturday, September 12, 3- 6 p.m
Venue: Nonaka-Hill Kyoto

Nonaka-Hill Kyoto is pleased to present “Earthscape”, an exhibition of new work by Rando Aso (b. 1983). Beginning with the elemental relationship between earth and fire, Aso explores the relationship between form and space through firing techniques including field firing and smudge firing. For this exhibition, Aso’s first collaboration with Japanese speaker brand listude uses their polyhedral omnidirectional speakers to extend his exploration of space through sound throughout the gallery.

In 2026, Aso participated in the 20th Paramita Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition at the Paramita Museum in Mie, and is currently participating in the 2026 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale at the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan.

Repost from Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Explore the first-ever monograph dedicated to Kenzi Shiokava’s work with Nolan Jimbo (Nolan Jimbo), curator of “Kenzi Shiokava” at the MCA. This beautiful hardcover spans decades of art and features new photography alongside archival glimpses into Shiokava’s practice and studio. The catalogue is available online, or you can swing by the MCA Store after your visit → go.mcachicago.org/shiokava-book

Kenzi Shiokava (b. 1938, Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, Brazil; d. 2021, Los Angeles, CA) worked for 50 years with the artistec recovery and revitalization of discarded materials. In his hands, objects scavenged from secondhand stores and the street were granted second lives as totems and assemblages. Comparing his process to archeology, Shiokava carved and staged materials to unearth their “inner movement,” a sense of their past lives and spiritual presence.

“HARD LINE WOMEN”

September 16 – November 7, 2026

Opening Reception: Wednesday, September 16th, 6-8 pm
Venue: Nonaka-Hill Los Angeles

Nonaka-Hill Los Angeles presents “Hard Line Women”, an exhibition of Japanese women artists working during the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and today. Producing works across painting, performance, sculpture, installation and photography, Sumie Aoki (1924 – 2025); Akiko Horio (1937-); Rei Kawakubo (1942 - ); Kazuko Miyamoto (1942 - ); Aiko Miyawaki (1929-2014); Rakuko Naito (1935 - ); Etsuko Nakatsuji (1937- ); Tomie Ohtake (1913-2015); Kay Sekimachi (1926 -); Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005); Eiko Yamazawa (1899-1995); and Shizuko Yoshikawa (1934-2019) each have practiced singular versions of hard-edged abstraction.

“Hard Line Women” identifies a powerful language of expression, concurrent with pivotal periods in the global women’s movement. Either for their lifetime, or for a brief period, these artists chose to sculpt, paint and photograph hard edges—against masculine ideals and grandiosity — countering storm and stress with rationalism and geometry. That several of them worked as graphic designers (Yamazawa, Miyawaki, Nakatsuji, Yoshikawa) alongside or as supplements to their art careers, suggests, at least, an abiding interest in coolness and formal order, a striving towards a materialist and non-psychological reality that lives beyond the artist and artwork. They have left behind, and in some cases continue to leave, singular bodies of work defying formal and gender-based expectations. while also expanding beyond the limitations of hard edge abstraction. The breadth and depth of these women’s work reveals how they perform beyond it’s strict parameters and will serve to illuminate threads in 20th century modernism while continuing the project of exhibiting the pioneering contributions of female Japanese artists.

Punching Block

Punching Block

Punching Block is a collection created through a collaboration between monoya, a Kyoto-based design studio and antique shop, and EETAL, a precision sheet-metal manufacturer based in Nagasaki Prefecture.

Through its work with old objects, monoya has been drawn to the way an object’s value and meaning remain unfixed, changing according to where it is placed and who encounters it. This idea is translated here through industrial materials and precise fabrication.

Each piece consists of a box-like perforated-metal form penetrated by a single L-shaped pipe. While the exterior appears solid, its internal structure emerges in fragments depending on distance, angle, and light. As the viewer moves, shifting moiré patterns create the impression that the object itself is in motion.

No single function is prescribed; how each piece is used is left to its owner. Its relationship with space and the viewer is renewed each time it is placed, seen, or used.

Yuka Shiobara
Born in 1985 in Ibaraki, Japan. Lives and works in Chiba.

Yuka Shiobara explores vision, perception, memory, and consciousness—how we understand what we cannot always see. Her recent work also draws from physics, quantum mechanics, and astronomy.

In the works shown here, “Traumatic Memory: Drawing for Locking” (2025) and “Traumatic Memory: Drawing for Unlocking” (2025), Shiobara imagines memory as a fictional device. At its center is a cabinet that stores memories. The blue pattern covering its surface represents neurons.

In “Drawing for Locking,” the cabinet is closed, keeping traumatic memories inside. In “Drawing for Unlocking,” it opens and the drawers extend outward, allowing those memories to be accessed and retrieved.

“Drawing of a Neuron” (2025), also shown here, is an enlarged view of a single neuron—the same form that appears across the cabinet's surface. The perspective moves from an imagined device for storing memory to the cellular structure involved in memory itself.

Shiobara gives physical form to processes we cannot see: remembering and forgetting, locking something away and retrieving it again.

Works by Yuka Shiobara are currently on view at Nonaka-Hill Kyoto.

You Hirose (b. 1990, Tokyo) works with cloisonné enamel while pursuing an approach distinct from the medium’s traditional ornamentation.

Cloisonné traditionally uses several colors of enamel to create images and patterns. In his “Copper and White-Glaze Cloisonné”works, Hirose limits the palette to white, allowing the interaction of copper, enamel, and fire to remain visible across the surface.

Some works are shaped by repeatedly hammering sheets of copper, while others are designed using 3D data. In each, the form is sharp and clearly defined. Reddish-brown copper traces the edges, while blue seeps into the surrounding white enamel. At the precise limits of the form, the boundaries of color begin to shift, giving the hard copper vessel a luminous and mysterious depth.

The works can be used as vessels, yet their presence sets them apart from ordinary functional objects. By stripping cloisonné of ornament, Hirose transforms the vessel through the material effects produced in firing.

“sibo” is a series of dining chairs by Kyoto-based design studio monoya, made from jinzo shibori maruta (artificially textured logs), a traditional material produced in the Kitayama and Onogo area of Kyoto, where the studio has its workshop and storage space.

The material is made from straight-grown Kitayama cedar. Hundreds of rods called hashi are wrapped around the trunk, gradually creating its distinctive textured surface. Historically used in sukiya architecture and as decorative pillars in traditional Japanese interiors, its production has declined as lifestyles and architectural practices have changed.

For “sibo,” each log is cut into half- and quarter-round sections and incorporated directly into the structure of the chair. After painting, the surface is sanded so that color remains only in the recessed areas, revealing the distinctive pattern shaped by time and handwork.

“sibo” is currently available to order through Nonaka-Hill Kyoto, with an approximate lead time of three months. Please DM us for inquiries.

Based in Kagoshima, Masami Tokuda works with wood and lacquer, allowing each form to develop through the act of making. He uses no preparatory drawings or recorded measurements, responding directly to the material rather than following a fixed design.

Music has long been part of Tokuda’s life, and sound and rhythm remain central to his work. Knots, distortions, and decayed areas establish each piece’s pace, pauses, and balance.

The lacquered surface can resemble metal or ceramic. Yet when held, its apparent hardness and weight give way to the lightness and warmth of wood. This contrast between what the eye expects and what the hand feels is essential to the experience of Tokuda’s work.

Shinryo Saeki

(b. 1979, Hiroshima, Japan)

Shinryo Saeki is a photographer who collects “life, death, and humor” from everyday moments without limiting his subjects.

Born into a family that runs a Buddhist temple, Saeki grew up with a close awareness of human existence and the impermanence of life. Through chance encounters with people, animals, landscapes, and everyday events, he reveals the humor and mystery woven into the world around us.

Saeki’s photographs resonate with each viewer’s memories and imagination, allowing different narratives to emerge. They offer a fresh perspective on the familiar world, reminding us that an image capable of making us smile is, like life and death, an essential part of the landscape that shapes our everyday lives.

Works by Shinryo Saeki are currently on view at Nonaka-Hill Kyoto.
