Nonaka-Hill is pleased to participate in POST-FAIR PARIS with works by Sawako Goda and Kentaro Kawabata. POST-FAIR opens on Monday, October 19th and is located at 74 / 79 Rue de Temple in the Marais.

Sawako Goda’s paintings of Hollywood femme fatales, will be accompanied by Xerox works she created during a performance organized by Fuji Xerox at the Sony Building in Ginza in 1970. Raw fish, squid and skulls were placed directly on the copy machine and adorned with faux haute joaillerie arranged with prosthetic eyes, hair combs and metal mesh. A fish gripping a glass eye, a horse’s skull entwined with chains, a squid paired with rings—the combinations are at once grotesque and opulent, encapsulating Goda’s unique and surreal poetic conflation of postwar ruin and Baroque fantasy.

Kentaro Kawabata’s variations on the Spoon form evoke musical instruments and/or anatomical forms. Hand-formed in porcelain, these imperfectly symmetrical works incorporate pulverized jewel-toned glass, crushed Sprite bottles, oxblood glazes, feldspar, sand, silver, and metallic slag, with surfaces crenellated by nimble flourishes of platinum gilding. Marbled colors ripple across the porcelain like pigments deliberately left unmixed, conjuring a raw, exuberant reinterpretation of Baroque fantasy. Kawabata’s ornamental virtuosity heightens the visceral immediacy of his sculpture.

We are pleased to share the special exhibition “Shigaraki New Wave: Expanding Horizons of Contemporary Creativity” currently on view at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Ceramic Art Museum. This exhibition highlights dynamic new currents emerging from Shigaraki and Iga, where artists cross traditional boundaries in ceramics, sculpture, painting, and installation.

Participating from Nonaka-Hill are Tomohisa Obana, Tomoko Obana, and Masaomi Yasunaga.

Kenzi Shiokava is included in The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990 opening October 18, 2026 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). This is the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to the impact of the Brockman Gallery, founded in South L.A. by brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis in the wake of the Watts Rebellion. Their space became vital for young artists of color, nurturing the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, Carrie Mae Weems, and Kenzi Shiokava among others.

In 1964, Shiokava immigrated to the United States from Brazil, and studied art at Chouinard Art Institute (CalArts). To support himself, Shiokava worked as a gardener for most of his life, integrating botanicals into his practice in a profound way, keeping a garden at his studio which he often cultivated for his sculptures. He gathered telephone poles, tree-roots, beaded curtains, boxes of all types, paintings and countless found oddities. Of his interest in reclaimed materials, Kenzi Shiokava remarked, “I feel in them the mystery of history and seek to bring out the spiritual essence and presence inherent in such materials.”

崖の先に、レストランがひとつ。

窓辺には、海底から引き上げられたようなオブジェ。重力に逆らうグラスの水。

壁には、魚と宝石が複写された、色褪せた図像。グリルから立つ煙。

影が長く伸びる頃、始まる食事。窓の向こうには、絶えず形を変えていく雲。音のない波。

料理が進むにつれ、外の景色から少しずつ色が失われていく。

海と空の境界が消え、やがて窓の向こうは、暗闇になる。
しばらくすると、沖合のイカ釣り漁船が、黒い海にいくつかの灯りを浮かべる。

半世紀前に感光した魚。
ガラスに映る、酔っ払う大人。
灯りのつかない家。
動き出す動物。

A restaurant at the end of a cliff.
By the window, an object that looks as if it had been pulled up from the seabed. A glass of water defying gravity.

On the wall, a faded image of a fish and jewels, reproduced long ago. Smoke rising from the grill.
Dinner begins when the shadows grow long. Beyond the window, clouds keep changing shape. Soundless waves.

As the meal goes on, the world outside slowly loses its color.

The line between sea and sky disappears, and before long, the view beyond the window turns to darkness.

After a while, squid-fishing boats offshore set a few lights afloat on the black sea.

A fish exposed to light half a century ago.
Drunken adults reflected in the glass.
Houses where no lights come on.
Animals beginning to move.

高温の窯の中で土が発光する瞬間を見つめる中で、素材の背後に「光のかたまり」というイメージを抱いたという阿曽氏。
《Sphere of the Earth》は、そのイメージを宿す依代（よりしろ）として形づくられました。

釉薬を使用せず、煙や野焼きの温度によって生み出された偶然の表情は、まるで惑星の地表や悠久の時間を映し出すスクリーンのようです。

Rando Aso — Sphere of the Earth

Inspired by witnessing clay glow in the intense heat of the kiln, Rando Aso envisioned a "mass of light" dwelling deep within the material. Sphere of the Earth was shaped as a vessel (yorishiro) to harbor that very image.

Created without the use of glazes, its unrepeatable surface texture shaped by smoke and the varying temperatures of pit-firing evokes the landscape of a distant planet and the quiet passage of time.

阿曽藍人は1983年奈良県生まれ。現在、岐阜県美濃加茂市を拠点に制作しています。「Earthscape」は、土を焼くという行為を通して、その内に潜む風景を可視化しようとする試みです。

Nonaka-Hill Kyoto is pleased to present “Earthscape”, an exhibition of new works by Rando Aso, on view through October 24.

Born in Nara Prefecture in 1983, Aso is currently based in Minokamo, Gifu Prefecture. “Earthscape” explores the act of firing earth as a means of revealing the landscapes latent within the material.

Nonaka-Hill Los Angeles presents Hard Line Women, an exhibition of Japanese women artists working during the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and today. Producing works across painting, performance, sculpture, installation and photography, Sumie Aoki (1924 – 2025); Akiko Horio (1937-); Rei Kawakubo (1942 - ); Kazuko Miyamoto (1942 - ); Aiko Miyawaki (1929-2014); Rakuko Naito (1935 - ); Etsuko Nakatsuji (1937- ); Tomie Ohtake (1913-2015); Kay Sekimachi (1926 -); Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005); Eiko Yamazawa (1899-1995); and Shizuko Yoshikawa (1934-2019) each have practiced singular versions of hard-edged abstraction.

Nonaka-Hill Kyotoでは、阿曽藍人による新作展「Earthscape」を10月24日まで開催しています。

土を焼くという行為を通して、その内に潜む風景を可視化する本展。《痕跡の影 / Threshold Trace》とともに、薄い陶板を連ねた《Earthscape》、焼成中に発光する土から着想した「光のかたまり」のイメージを宿す《Sphere of the Earth》、閉ざされた箱が見えない内部の空間を想像させる《Intimate Space》を展示しています。
listudeとのコラボレーションにより、通常は完成した作品の背後に隠れている「制作の音」が空間に漂い、土が変容していく時間そのものを感じる場をつくり出しています。

本展は、阿曽が土と火の間で見出す風景を辿ります。

Earthscape, an exhibition of new work by Rando Aso, is on view at Nonaka-Hill Kyoto through October 24.

Through the act of firing, Aso seeks to make visible the landscapes latent within clay. Alongside Threshold Trace, the exhibition presents Earthscape, composed of thin ceramic sheets joined into a continuous plane; Sphere of the Earth, which holds the image of a “mass of light” inspired by clay glowing during firing; and Intimate Space, whose closed boxes invite viewers to imagine their unseen interiors.

In collaboration with listude, recordings of Aso’s working process—normally concealed behind the finished works—drift through the gallery, creating a space in which to experience the transformation of clay and the time embedded in that process.

The exhibition traces the landscapes Aso finds between clay and fire.

After tapestries, then double, triple, quadruple, and multiple weaves, where flat layers are woven on top of each other, the next logical step was to open those layers out and encompass space, to enter the third dimension.
