Congratulations to Jinbin Chen on his solo exhibition “When Clouds Are Floating White as Swans” at HUA International.

The exhibition takes its title from the opening line of a poem by Latvian poet Eduards Veidenbaums (1867–1892), whose verses move from romantic longing—clouds like swans and roses that never fade—to the stark realities of human existence. This tension between tenderness and estrangement echoes throughout Chen’s work.

On view through July 17th.

An initial introduction to Michael Kohn Gallery’s upcoming fall exhibition, “But what do the clothes mean?”

Curated by Simon Chilvers, this exhibition aims to depict and unpick the clothing captured by a group of contemporary artists and consider how it forms part of a particular narrative and in some cases their wider practice.

Chilvers writes, “It’s a simple question but one packed full of diverse ideas and points of view. The way that clothing inhabits artworks is endlessly fascinating to me. What are these clothes saying about that figure in the painting? Or indeed what is it revealing of the artist themselves? What led this artist to paint that particular pair of boots? And why are those trousers that colour?”

Pictured is “Petros,” 2026, by UK-based artist Sarah Ball who is creating a new piece for the exhibition. In response to these inquisitions Ball explains, “I grew up in a decade defined by punk, post punk, mod revival, Ska, Synth-pop and New Romanticism. Driven by socio-economic turmoil in the UK, seasonal fashion trends gave way to shifting musical tribal identities. This DIY aesthetic has stayed with me all my life and I have used clothing as a way of negotiating my place in the world. I’m inspired by and celebrate people for whom identity is portrayed not as a stable condition, but as something creative, playful and highly individual.”

Opening tomorrow 6 to 8pm. “Object Poetry,” an active observation and engagement with sculptures that inhabit the lacunae where language lapses. The featured works–spanning performance, kinetics, and assemblage–use sound, light, video, movement and found objects as structural mnemonic devices. Across three “verses,” or participatory environments, the presentation asks, “What possibilities do these forms make actual?” Guided by this central question, adopted from artist, Intermedia theorist, and Fluxus co-founder Dick Higgins, the exhibition engages the viewer as a physical and emotional participant.

12 hours of install in 30 seconds. Come see “Object Poetry” opening this Thursday, June 11th from 6 to 8pm.

Rather than representations, the human and non-human sculptures by artists Ian Burns, Bruce Conner, Tony Oursler, Chiffon Thomas, and Cajsa von Zeipel are reconfigurations of the psychological, physical and meta-physical human experience. Thomas embodies a new modality of existence through a sonic and performative inversion of human and architectural faculties, while von Zeipel situates post-capitalist themes in a futuristic, human-object cyborg, and Burns in a kinetic live-feedback sculpture of everyday objects. Oursler’s audio-visual sculpture projects a media-saturated consciousness onto an electronic entity, and Conner reduces feeling to a conceptual melding of found objects. In between each point of origin from which the artists build, and augment, are constructions united by their intermedial entanglement with sonic vibrations, lo-fi experimentation, digital performance, and ephemeral qualities.

Opening today at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, “Conundrums” marks Alicia Adamerovich’s debut museum exhibition.

Adamerovich’s paintings, drawings, and sculptural frames chart introspective journeys through landscapes of the subconscious. Balancing familiarity and estrangement, attraction and unease, her work transforms emotion into evocative terrains of mystery, apprehension, and wonder. Her distinctive frames extend beyond their traditional role, becoming integral elements of the artwork that invite viewers into a more immersive experience.

As Adamerovich states: “I don’t wish for my frames to be vessels for the work, but instead to be extensions of the line… making connections with both the viewer’s body and mind. Immersing oneself is bringing the experience closer to my own experience of creation.”

Born in 1933, internationally recognized American artist Bruce Conner is best known for his assemblages, surrealist sculptures, avant-garde short films, and detailed paintings and drawings. Conner’s innovative film works, often utilizing montaged shots from pre-existing footage and incorporating pop music for soundtracks, have inspired generations of filmmakers and are considered precursors to the music video genre. He was a central figure in the San Francisco Beat scene of the 1950s and remained an active proponent of the countercultural movement at large through his death in San Francisco in 2008.
