Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to share Joe Goode’s major exhibition of paintings and works on paper, Torn Skies, opening tomorrow at Zander Galerie in Cologne.

Spanning more than three decades of Goode’s remarkable career, the exhibition brings together key works from some of his most significant bodies of work, tracing his enduring fascination with the sky as both subject and metaphor.

Across Goode’s practice, the sky is never simply a backdrop. Vast, atmospheric, and seemingly infinite, it became a recurring presence through which he explored perception, space, beauty, and the everyday.

We’re pleased to share that Lita Albuquerque will join independent curator Grant Johnson for a conversation on the occasion of her High Desert Test Sites Artist Fellowship.

For more than five decades, Albuquerque’s expansive practice has explored land, perception, the cosmos, and the limits of human understanding. Throughout 2026, she will be in residence at High Desert Test Sites developing a new site-specific work, opening to the public November 14, 2026.

Join Lita and Grant on Saturday, September 12 at 3 PM at MOCA Grand Ave for this special conversation.

This program is part of MOCA’s environmental programming and is made possible by the Nora McNeely Hurley Foundation.

Connections made over 100 years in our Gallery 4 presentation.

A group of works that range in date from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century and, in many ways, share artistic and thematic sensibilities. Antonio Gisbert painted this Spanish-infused portrait in 1868. Taking its cue from Velázquez, this canvas is a magnificent study of blacks and browns, a palette in which Spanish painters excelled. John Altoon’s abstraction in brown, white, and black was executed in 1954, following his return from Spain and France that same year. Later, in 1977, Joe Goode painted this work on paper from his Black Paintings series, in which a minimalist, monochromatic black-and-brown surface is intentionally scarred by slashes, reminding the viewer that they are looking at an “object” as much as an “image.” Finally, two years earlier, in 1975, Richard Pettibone painted his exacting, photorealistic detail after Ingres’ The Princess de Broglie (1853), in which the painted blue satin of Ingres’ original is akin to the black silk of Gisbert’s female portrait, made 15 years later.

Wishing Jinbin a very happy birthday!

Jinbin Chen’s delicate color palettes create environments that house his male subjects in themes of vulnerability, fragility, honesty, and comfort. These spaces seek to uncover a language of intimacy that excludes the sexually explicit, and rather, paint his own vocabulary of desire: a vernacular that absorbs a viewer’s gaze. In his portraiture, the masculine traverses a terrain of liminal gender dispositions that embrace the freedom of becoming sans societal boundaries of gender. In its essence, Chen’s work depicts the encounter of bodies, those significant and seemingly insignificant, that have the potential to impact the trajectory of one’s life. Bridging his practice to the personal, Chen excavates topics on gender temperament, sexuality, inbetweeness, the abject, identification and differentiation.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of composer and electronic music pioneer Patrick Gleeson, a longtime friend and collaborator of Bruce Conner.

Gleeson’s relationship with Conner spanned decades, beginning in the 1970s with some of Conner’s most celebrated films. His music and electronic sound became an integral part of films such as CROSSROADS (1976) and TAKE THE 5:10 TO DREAMLAND (1976).

Their collaboration was rooted in a shared spirit of experimentation. In TAKE THE 5:10 TO DREAMLAND, Conner created the film in response to Gleeson’s composition, allowing sound to guide the images rather than the other way around. For CROSSROADS, Gleeson created the extraordinary electronic soundscape accompanying the first half of Conner’s monumental film.

We remember Patrick Gleeson for his remarkable contributions to music and for the singular body of work that grew out of his friendship and creative dialogue with Bruce Conner.

Throughout his career, Mark Innerst has transformed the urban landscape, investing it with his unique kind of deeply resonant beauty, complexity and luminosity. Cities like New York and Philadelphia appear alternately majestic, immense, and serene, as streetscapes morph into a series of skyward-shooting lines or stacked, layered blocks of color. Vanishing points slip off-center, displaced by buildings that curve overhead or sweep downward to street level, where human activity is reduced to blurs of light and movement.

Wishing Siji Krishnan a very happy birthday! 🎉

Born in Kerala and currently based in Kochi, India, Siji Krishnan received her MFA from the Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Arts in Hyderabad and her BFA from Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts at the University of Kerala. In 2019, she was an artist-in-residence at Koganecho Art Center in Yokohama, Japan.

Krishnan’s work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Minneapolis Institute of Art; and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, among others. Her work has been featured in the National Gallery of Victoria Triennial, the Moscow Biennale of International Contemporary Art, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and The Warehouse in Dallas, as well as in solo exhibitions at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke in Mumbai.

In 2024, Krishnan presented her U.S. debut solo exhibition, Liminal Spaces, at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles and in 2025 her first solo museum exhibition, The Secret Place, at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.
