The Broad is a new contemporary art museum founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler and offers free general admission. The museum is home to the more than 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building features two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and is the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library.

The Broad stays open throughout construction, and our collection is going global. This spring, 164 works will travel to the Frank Gehry-designed Fondation Louis Vuitton (Fondation Louis Vuitton) in Paris, while more than 160 works remain on view in L.A. ✈️🗼

The Broad Collection — Los Angeles in Paris, the largest exhibition of the collection ever mounted outside of Los Angeles, will be on view April 21 through August 30, 2027, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The show will fill nearly the entire building with works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol, and more. It also includes recent acquisitions from L.A. artists Sayre Gomez, Lauren Halsey, Patrick Martinez, and Laura Owens.

“It’s about the collection having a life outside of Los Angeles while we prepare to bring everything back into the building,” says Founding Director and President Joanne Heyler. “And it offers ways of looking at the collection through a fresh lens.”

Closer to home, The Broad is collaborating with Art + Practice (Art + Practice) in Leimert Park on a multiyear partnership to share works from the collection and resources. More details on this programming coming soon!

The works traveling to Paris come home in 2028 for a grand opening exhibition celebrating the museum’s expansion, which will add 70% more gallery space.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a day of remembrance, resistance, celebration, and joy. We honor the people and ancestors who survived colonization, violence, removal, and erasure, and celebrate the Indigenous artists, organizers, educators, culture-bearers, families, and neighbors building new futures today.

The Broad is on the homelands of the Tongva and is surrounded by the lands of the Tataviam, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples, all of whose presence, cultures, and stewardship of this land continue to this day.

The Chapter House is an Indigenous-led community space bringing together Native people from the hundreds of tribes and nations who call Los Angeles home.

Together over the past year, The Broad and The Chapter House have partnered to bring Indigenous artists, makers, and knowledge with communities across the city.

This , The Chapter House’s LA NDN Flea returns to The Broad November 7 + 8 for a weekend celebrating Indigenous artists, makers, small businesses, and community. Today, on what would have been John Lennon’s 86th birthday, Yoko Ono’s IMAGINE PEACE TOWER (2007) lights up on Viðey Island in Reykjavík, Iceland, for the 19th year.

Ono dedicated the tower to Lennon at its unveiling on October 9, 2007, his 67th birthday. The words IMAGINE PEACE are inscribed on its Wishing Well in 24 languages, and the well holds more than a million wishes collected from Ono’s Wish Tree (1996) installations around the world. The light shines every year from October 9 through the end of December and changes with Iceland’s weather: a clear pillar on cloudless nights, rainbow refractions in rain or snow, and beams reflecting off moving clouds. 🎨 “Art is my life and my life is art.” — Yoko Ono

🕊️ For Yoko Ono, the boundary between artist and audience is not fixed. For more than seven decades, she has created works that begin with an idea or instruction, inviting the audience to help realize them. It’s an approach that helped define conceptual art, keeping each work open-ended and continually reinterpreted.

💭 “The only sound that exists to me is the sound of the mind. My works are only to induce music of the mind in people.” Ono’s book Grapefruit (1964) gathered her instructions for artworks, many requiring an action or another person, not just imagination, to become real.

✏️ Shadow Piece (1963) is one of these instructions, asking participants to trace their own shadow or someone else’s until they become one. In a 1966 performance, 20 people outlined their bodies on a long cloth, evoking the imprints left by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The individual outlines slowly grow into an image of unity.

🔵 “I like to fight the establishment by using methods that are so far removed from establishment-type thinking that the establishment doesn’t know how to fight back.” Ono keeps her actions simple. She sets the starting point and asks participants to complete the work, showing how individual acts add up to a greater impact.

🚢 In Add Colour (Refugee Boat) (1960), each version begins with an all-white boat in an all-white room. Visitors add hopes and beliefs in blue and white paint pens until the room slowly fills with layered shades. Made in response to refugees risking their lives at sea, the work gathers hundreds of voices into one space and shows what collective responsibility looks like.

❤️ “Remember, our hearts are one. Even when we are at war with each other, our hearts are always beating in unison.” Peace can begin with participation, whether that’s tracing a shadow or writing your hopes on a wall. Ono asks us to imagine peace first, then act on it in small ways that reach others. PEACE is POWER.

Last ArtNight with Yoko Ono is this Thursday 🚨

The Broad joins DTLA ArtNight () once again on Thursday, October 1, as part of our free Thursday evenings, held weekly from 5pm to 8pm. This week is the final ArtNight with free access to Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind before the exhibition closes on October 11. Our collection galleries will be open too, now featuring new works on view from the vault by artists like Andy Warhol, Glenn Ligon, and John Baldessari.

Keep the night going across Grand Avenue, the Historic Core, and the Fashion District, where galleries and venues open their doors for free, many until 10pm.
