Our upcoming September 19th auction features a serene landscape painting by Arthur Hill Gilbert.
In 1913, Gilbert studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, before entering the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Following his graduation from the Academy, he served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After the war ended, Gilbert left the Navy and traveled to France, where he turned his attention to painting and pursued formal study in the arts.
In 1929, Gilbert established himself in Monterey, California, where the landscape of the Monterey Peninsula became a central focus of his work. He became known for his landscape paintings, finding inspiration in the region’s rugged hills and ancient oak trees.
