A new acquisition by Wolf Kahn, titled “Central Park, New York.”

A second-generation New York School artist, Wolf Kahn was known for luminous, lyrical paintings of forests and farmlands that combined realism with the immediacy of Abstract Expressionism. Kahn’s signature landscapes took inspiration from the palettes of Henri Matisse and the ethos of his Vermont farm. He painted weathered barns, undulating pastures, and tree lines that embraced a spare, evocative New England aesthetic. Kahn studied under Hans Hofmann and cited Mark Rothko, J.M.W. Turner, and Pierre Bonnard as additional influences. Today, Kahn’s work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among other institutions.

Several works by Byron Anway are currently on view in our first floor gallery. Anway is an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in the School of Art, Art History, and Design. He previously taught art abroad at the International School of Brussels in Belgium and American Academy Casablanca in Morocco.

“My artwork incorporates personal stories and contemporary historical events to understand the world. In that way, my practice closely mimics the study of Epistemology. I try to understand the differences between opinion and knowledge. I draw from memory and imagination to tell emotionally authentic and personal coming of age stories. Whether showing a disparate world full of kinetic human energy or an introspective abstraction with space for deep thinking, these new works draw on themes of spirituality, cultural relativism, and adventure.”

“My work is about structure, composition, proportion, balance and equilibrium. These are not emotions, but they interest me.”

Two works by James Eisentrager are coming to auction this Saturday. Although Eisentrager began his artistic career as a representational painter, he became best known for his structuralist works, which explored the relationships between shape, geometry and mathematics. His emphasis on formal structure placed his work within the anti-Expressionist tradition.

Eisentrager studied at Augustana College in South Dakota before receiving his M.F.A. at the University of Iowa. He was a Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska and exhibited his work extensively, including exhibitions in Kansas City and at the Joslyn Museum of Art in Omaha, Nebraska.
