LUX Center for the Arts The LUX is Lincoln's Community Arts Center, a vital resource for the visual arts in Nebraska.

LUX Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to provide high quality visual arts experiences and educational opportunities for its community through art classes, artist in residency programs, gallery exhibitions, and community outreach. The center, organized as the University Place Arts Center in 1977, was renamed in honor of Gladys M. Lux - benefactor, artist, and arts educator - who purchased and donated the building for arts education purposes. On the LUX campus you will find five free gallery spaces to explore, a gift shop with artwork from local, regional, and national artists, classrooms, artist studios, and the Community Art Alley where the public can take photos and make their own creations with paint. The LUX welcomes people from all walks of life to learn about art in an environment that encourages exploration.

🍂 Fall Fest is this Saturday 24, from 10am to 2pm at Leghton District!!

You’ll find local food trucks, vintage vendors, local businesses, and live music from Post Service Collective from 11am - 1pm. It’s free to attend, LUX Center will have a booth with a special printmaking art activity! 🎨🖌️

Make something new this month at LUX! Check out some of the classes & workshops starting in October ✨

🌸 Fall Ikebana Flower Arranging - Wednesday, October 21, 6-8pm
In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn basic Ikebana skills and create a flower arrangement. Bring your own vase or borrow one during class, and take home a small flower frog (kenzan) to display your arrangement. Pre-registration is required.

🥣 Soup Bowls & Spoons Workshop - Friday, October 23, 6-8:30pm
Learn simple handbuilding techniques for making a handmade soup bowl and spoon, including coil building, using molds, and carving into clay. No experience is needed. The instructor will glaze and fire your pieces, and all materials and kiln firings are included.

🏺 Advanced Wheel Throwing: Condiment Containers & Dishes - Monday, October 26, 6pm
Designed for experienced ceramic artists interested in creating specialty kitchen and serving ware for condiments. Students will focus on throwing, altering, and refining functional forms such as butter dishes, oil cruets, honey jars, salt and pepper shakers, cream and sugar, and multipart serving dishes.

Join us Friday, October 23, from 6–7:30 pm at LUX for an Artist Lecture with ceramic artist Larry Buller!

Larry will expand on his exhibition, Gaze: Jockstraps, Bunnies and the Divine, on view now in our East Gallery, and share more about his current practice. He’ll talk about how the objects he collects and lives with shape his richly ornamented ceramics, drawing on religious imagery, historic ceramics, and gay male visual culture to explore how objects carry beauty, desire, authority, and reverence.

As a gay man from the Great Plains, Larry considers how familiar forms and unexpected combinations can make room for lives and desires that have often been left out.

Gaze: Jockstraps, Bunnies and the Divine is on view through October 31, so stop by the gallery before the lecture to see the work in person.

Get into the spooky season with these upcoming Adult Classes at LUX! ✨

💀 Ceramic Sugar Skulls Workshop - Saturday, October 24, 10am-12:30pm
Calaveras de Azúcar (Sugar skulls) are traditional Mexican decorative candies traditionally prepared for Día de Mu***os (Day of the Dead), a tradition that blends pre-Hispanic and post-colonial traditions of Mexico. In this workshop each student will be provided a clay skull which then will be decorated using colored slips to replicate the look of sugar and icing.

🪡 Spooky Needle Felting - Monday, October 26, 6-9pm
Learn the basics of needle felting by creating your own spooky character. Students will start with a simple base form and transform it into ghosts, black cats, pumpkins, or other eerie creations using layered wool and expressive details. All materials are provided.

📙Tiny Handmade Spellbooks - Wednesday, October 28, 6-9pm
Create your own tiny handmade spellbooks while learning the fundamentals of bookbinding in a single workshop. Students will be introduced to the entire bookbinding process, from folding pages and preparing signatures to sewing decorative bindings and assembling finished books.

What stories can food tell? From family traditions and cultural identity to memory, labor, power, and survival, food shapes our lives in ways that go far beyond the table.

LUX Center for the Arts invites artists working in all media to submit work for Aftertaste, an upcoming juried group exhibition exploring the personal, cultural, and political dimensions of food and eating. We welcome humorous, critical, poetic, and unexpected interpretations of the theme.

TONIGHT! Join us for the opening reception of Clay Sculpture: A Student Art Exhibition in the T.C. Cardwell Community Gallery, 5-8 pm. ✨

This show features sculptures by students in Nathan Murray's Clay Sculpture class here at LUX. Through hands-on study of form, proportion, anatomy, texture, and surface, each artist brings their own ideas and perspective to the clay. The result is a diverse collection shaped by a shared process of learning, experimenting, and making together.

This opening reception is part of our October First Friday offerings at LUX! While you're here, explore the rest of our galleries, including the opening of Larry Buller's Gaze: Jockstraps, Bunnies and the Divine in the East Gallery. Artist-in-Residence open studio night, interactive demos with LUX Teaching Artists, and drop in our classrooms to get cozy, and decorate a Pumpkin to take home!

Join us at LUX Center Friday, October 2, from 5-8pm for a special First Friday Reception! 🌟

We welcome Larry Buller to the East Gallery with the opening of his show Gaze: Jockstraps, Bunnies and the Divine. Plus, the opening of Clay Sculpture: A Student Art Exhibition in the Community Gallery, featuring sculpture created by students in Nathan Murray's Clay Sculpture class at LUX. 🏺

LUX Artists-in-Residence will have open studios throughout the night. Stop by to meet our residents ( David Kruk, José Galván Martínez, and Alex Renbarger) and see what they're currently working on! ✨

We are thrilled to welcome José Galván Martínez as our newest Artist-in-Residence in Ceramics! 🏺

A Chilango (Mexico City-born) visual artist, José explores the urban experience through hand-built ceramics and textiles, drawing on memories of his native Mexico, his family's relocations, and his assimilation into American culture. José earned his BA from California State University, Channel Islands, and his MFA at California State University.

Since joining LUX, José has already been an active presence in our community. He represented LUX at the Latino Festival with a custom linocut print he created especially for the occasion, celebrating Latino heritage and culture. As well as being selected to be a part of a group exhibition at El Museo Latino in Omaha.

José is a great teacher and offers classes in ceramics and sculpture, along with special classes and workshops centered on his Latino heritage such as Cartoneria Sculpture & Ceramic Sugar Skulls. Keep an eye on our class schedule for more opportunities to learn from José.
