The Burkholder Project

The Burkholder Project The Burkholder Project is a unique collection of 36 art and design studios with loft apartments and three levels of galleries.

It's been a Lincoln Haymarket mainstay since 1987 and features artists of all disciplines and styles. The Burkholder Project, located in downtown Lincoln's Haymarket District, is a unique collection of 36 art and design studios with loft apartments and three levels of galleries, connected by a sunfilled atrium. The Project was designed and developed by artist Anne Burkholder, who bought the buildi

ng in 1987. It was her idea to create a place where a community of artists would have excellent work spaces, as well as a support system of other creative people. The project also represents 40 regional Associated Artists in the Sampler Gallery on the lower level. The original building, built in 1914, was known as the Old Woods Brothers Office Building, which was the headquarters of several real-estate and agricultural businesses. Art thrives in this bright and exciting community in part because of the artists' interchange of ideas with one another and with the public. We invite you to join us, observe our creative processes, ask questions, learn about each of our art forms, browse through the galleries and visit the working studios and shops where you can see not only the finished works, but the works of art in progress. Enjoy your visit, and remember creativity takes concentration and unnecessary noise is a distraction. Our working hours are as diverse as our artwork. If a studio is closed the artist may be preparing for a show, painting on location, teaching or researching new projects. We hope you enjoy your visit and get to know us. We feature a new show monthly and look forward to seeing you again soon!

Moving In Circles by Janette Amberg in the Skylight Gallery this month. Show opening is Sept. 4th from 5-8pm!

“As I started creating, I was thinking I needed to start adding more greens and browns into my work; as consciously I do not veer towards those colors. It was a challenge for my brain! From simplicity to a touch more complex, there is surely something for everyone to enjoy in this new showing.”

White Noise by PJ Peters in the Main Gallery this month. Join us from 5-8pm on September 4th!

One of the things on my Spotify account is “10 Hour Rain, Thunder, and Lightning.” It’s one of many options for “white noise” — or sounds intended to promote relaxation, meditation and sleep — helping you relax and let go.

Even though I didn’t play this in my studio, my studio became — “my white-noise space” — a space where I could shut out the world and just create. I could physically feel the effects. My respirations and heart-beat slowed, my body relaxed, and the tension eased as I experienced sheer joy in seeing the work develop in front of me. The real-world was gone.

Creating in a “white-noise space” is helpful because I work intuitively, applying multiple layers for depth and interest. With each layer, I respond by making decisions about size and placement of shapes, lines, colors and values, adding or subtracting elements — and sometimes, painting over entire sections — until I’m satisfied.

As other artists will tell you, when the visual and emotional connection between the viewer (you) and what the artist (me) is trying to convey happens — it’s a magical connection — without any white noise.
