Happy ! One of the masks we recently unboxed is beautifully constructed of multiple materials. The face of the mask is metal, the sides and top are made of woven fabric, and it is beaded all over with shells and glass beads. We believe the mask is from the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is similar in style to Kuba bwoom masks, but lacks the typical enlarged forehead.

We are kicking off our long weekend by sharing that all three UNSM sites are Blue Star Museums again this summer. This means we're offering free admission for active-duty military and families including reserves and guard at Morrill Hall (Lincoln), Ashfall Fossil Beds (Royal) and Trailside Museum (Crawford).

Happy exploring and enjoy Memorial Day weekend!

Do you have a budding paleontologist or curious kiddo? There are still spaces left in our Curious Curators Summer Camp where your camper will get a behind-the-scenes look into the collections and exhibits at the museum, and get to explore items from different fields such as paleontology, anthropology and more.

Curious Curators is full-day camp running July 13-17, 9am-4pm and is best for ages 9-11.

This we are looking at one of the many masks in our recent donations. This is a topeng mask from Indonesia. Topeng is a dance performance where dancers wear masks and costumes to tell traditional stories. This mask represents a frog and may be linked to the popular Balinese fairytale of a princess who marries a frog.
