Students, staff and faculty aren't the only ones hard at work on campus as the semester begins 🐜

These carpenter ants (Camponotus) are busy excavating intricate tunnels and galleries in this tree for their nest. These ants do not consume wood but instead feed on other insects, floral nectar, and honeydew produced by aphids. They have even been known to "farm" these aphids, protecting them in order to increase their food supply. There are over 1,000 species of carpenter ants worldwide, with 11 species native to Nebraska. Some species can have up to 50,000 ants in a single colony! Happy !

It’s ! The surface of this decorative copper and black lacquer plate from Turkey is carved with an image of a “whirling dervish,” or a member of the Sufi order of Islam. Sufis, or dervishes, engage in mystic practices that emphasize physically experiencing the divine and abandonment of the ego. Depicted on this plate is a practice called the Sema, a form a physical meditation. Sufis wear traditional symbolic garments while they engage in this practice, including a tall, camel hair hat and a black cloak, symbolizing death, which is then taken off to reveal a white, long sleeve garment with a full skirt.

Today is the perfect day to get outside and search for insects! 🪲🐞

For the best luck, look in hidden places, like under rocks or leaves. Flowers are also a great spot to find bees and butterflies. And, if you need a magnifying glass to take a closer look, our Discovery Gift Shop sells insect exploration kits. Happy !
