Today’s #throwbackthursday features a silver-plated tea set made in 1871. This particular tea service was likely a wedding gift for William Pond Harris and Ida Florence Potter, who were married on May 7, 1873.

Earlier this week the tea service traveled to Jonesborough, where it was shown to participants at our SPARK! meeting. The Reece Museum partners with Alzheimer’s Tennessee to bring this program into the community once a month in order to help “spark” memories for people living with cognitive impairments.

The tea set was also featured in our exhibition “Suffrage in Southern Appalachia,” celebrating the centennial of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 2020.

Last week, we posted about archival storage boxes and how the #reecemuseum preserves and protects our collection. One worker at the museum who specializes in making archival storage boxes is Erin Fitzgerald. Erin says there is no one method or solution to making boxes that fits every artifact. "I look at the artifact and visualize what it would look like in a box," she explains before beginning to design. Featured are some of her most creative solutions and process for creating boxes for our artifacts.

The #reecemuseum houses 22,000+ artifacts in our permanent collection, telling the many stories of Appalachia through an eclectic range of objects dating from the 1600s to the modern era. Many of these artifacts require specialized archival storage boxes to properly preserve and protect them. Museum professionals design and construct these housings using archival materials and following professional standards. Many of the housings are designed by Reece Museum staff to fit specific artifacts, but these shoe box designs were found on a costume conservation website developed by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan of Art. Student workers assisted with building the boxes and sewing forms from stockinette to go inside each shoe. This box design allows us to view the shoes and preserves them in a 3D shape so that they are ready to be exhibited.

Last Thursday, the #reecemuseum received 50 objects in the Sammie Nicely collection. All of these objects are either from African descent or made by African American artists, including some pieces by Nicely himself. Nicely (b. 1947, d. 2015) was dedicated to preserving African art and culture in America, where it was otherwise overlooked by many. Right now, the museum is in the process of labeling these objects before we begin to photograph and store them in our collections room. Keep an ear out for more information on this collection, coming soon!

This banjo was made 58 years ago on March 10th, 1963 by Appalachian musician Frank Proffitt. From Reese, North Carolina, Proffitt was a key figure in the traditional, five-string banjo during the 60s and 70s. He is most known for his song “Tom Dooley”, and he is part of the Smithsonian Folkways Recording. In this video, the music you hear is being played by Roy Andrade, the Director of Old-Time at ETSU, in the style that Proffitt played in.

This mid-19th century dulcimer is one of the oldest instruments in the #reecemuseum collection. This instrument is commonly heard in traditional American music, and it took on its current configuration in Appalachia. It is usually plucked or strummed with items such as picks, feather quills, or the musician's fingers. This dulcimer also has a "face" carved into the neck of the instrument! This is the last week to view the first portion of the rotating exhibit "America's Music: Exploring Musical Artifacts from the Reece Museum's Permanent Collection".
