On September 1, 1975, history was made when General Daniel R. “Chappie” James Jr. was promoted to four-star general and became Commander in Chief of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD/ADCOM).

A Tuskegee-trained pilot, General James flew 101 combat missions in Korea and 78 in Vietnam. He went on to become the first African American to attain four-star rank in any branch of the U.S. military.

His more than 35 years of military service included numerous leadership positions and distinguished accomplishments.

The Sixth Street Museum District will host Science Saturday at Smith on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with 🍓🍓🍓 “Berry Curious: Discovering the DNA in a Strawberry,” a hands-on STEM experience designed especially for students in grades three through five.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
 Extract real DNA from a strawberry
 Learn how DNA helps shape living things
 Discover how scientists, pharmacists and doctors use DNA in medicine and research
 Explore exciting STEM careers and the many ways science can be used to solve real-world problems

Leading the program will be guest scientist Constance B. Shaw, a public health scientist who uses science and technology to help keep people healthy. Shaw works for the Mississippi State Department of Health, where she studies health information and helps address real-world public health challenges. Passionate about encouraging young people to ask questions and explore the world around
them, Shaw looks forward to introducing participants to the amazing world of DNA and inspiring them to consider the possibilities available through science and STEM-related careers.
