Meet Science Saturday’s Berry Curious: Discovering the DNA in a Strawberry guest scientist, Constance B. Shaw.

Shaw is a biologist and public health scientist who uses science and technology to help keep people healthy. Shaw works for the Mississippi State Department of Health, where she studies health information and helps address real-world public health challenges.

Passionate about encouraging young people to ask questions and explore the world around them, Shaw looks forward to introducing participants to the amazing world of DNA and inspiring them to consider the possibilities available through science and STEM-related careers.

HAPPENING TODAY! Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is hosting a Voter Information and Registration Ice Cream Social at Smith Drug Co., and the location could not be more fitting.

Smith Drug Co. carries the name and legacy of E. Hammond Smith, a man who understood that the right to vote was worth fighting for.

E. Hammond Smith and 14 other Black men filed a complaint against Luther Cox, the Circuit Clerk of Forrest County after they were prevented from exercising their right to vote. Their courageous action ultimately led to a federal lawsuit—and a victory for the petitioners, helping challenge the barriers that had been placed in the way of Black voters.

Three Generations. One Meaningful Visit.
We were pleased to welcome Major Beyea and his family—his wife, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Their visit was especially meaningful as three generations came together to experience and connect with the stories preserved within our museum.

A West Point graduate, Major Beyea shared personal memories from his time at the Academy. We always enjoy hearing the experiences and memories of those who have walked the halls of our nation’s military institutions.

During their visit, the family also picked up their Hattiesburg Convention Commission passport, giving them the opportunity to continue exploring the many outstanding entertainment, cultural, and educational attractions that Hattiesburg has to offer!

Thank you, Major Beyea and family, for spending part of your day with us.
