5 Days Away! The Clyde Kennard Lecture Series featuring the authors of Mixing: Race, Higher Education, and the Case of Clyde Kennard

Meet the Authors:
• Sherita Johnson, Associate Professor of English at Pennsylvania State University
• Cheryl Jenkins, Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Fine Arts at Talladega College
• Rebecca Tuuri, Associate Professor of History at The University of Southern Mississippi
Together, the authors will explore the story of Clyde Kennard, a Black Korean War veteran who courageously challenged racial segregation by seeking admission to the then-all-White Mississippi Southern College in the 1950s.

The man behind the legacy. Who was Clyde Kennard?

Clyde Kennard, born on June 12, 1927, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was a decorated Korean War veteran and civil rights pioneer who courageously sought to enroll at the all-white Mississippi Southern College, now The University of Southern Mississippi, during the Jim Crow era.

Despite repeated barriers, false criminal charges, and an unjust prison sentence, his pursuit of educational equality became an enduring part of Mississippi's civil rights history. On May 16, 2006, he was posthumously exonerated.

Join the Sixth Street Museum District and The University of Southern Mississippi's The Center for Black Studies on October 19 and 20 as we honor Kennard's legacy and explore his story through the new book, Mixing: Race, Higher Education, and the Case of Clyde Kennard with co-authors, Drs. Sherita Johnson, Cheryl Jenkins and Rebecca Tuuri.

Both events are free and open to the public.

The Sixth Street Museum District is seeking photographs that center Black voices, experiences, creativity, and cultural innovation for consideration in an upcoming exhibition.

We welcome images that explore new ideas, creativity, and cultural innovations within Black communities. Both digital and film photography will be considered.

📷 A maximum of four photographs can be submitted for consideration.

Today we enjoyed welcoming the Magee family to Eureka during their family reunion!

Danny Magee attended Eureka in elementary school and wanted to share with his family the place that made such a lasting impact on his childhood. It was a joy to see the smile on his face as he shared memories of his time here.

We wrapped up the Charles J. Brown Youth Civic Engagement and Leadership Camp on Saturday with an Action Civics Community Showcase. A big thank you to our incredible youth for their hard work in researching, developing and presenting their Action Civics projects!

We are so proud of them for sharing their perspectives on issues that matter to them. This year's projects addressed
• Hunger
• Mental Health
• Homelessness
• The Removal of African American Stories from American History

Thank you to our parents, families, and community members for joining us to support our youth as they shared their voices and vision for positive change.

On Friday, campers in the Charles J. Brown Youth Civic Engagement and Leadership Camp visited Forrest County Youth Court, where the Honorable Carol Jones-Russell, Youth Court Judge, provided a lesson on the branches of government, with a special focus on the Judiciary Branch, local curfew laws, and Mississippi's new youth gun violence law.

Judge Jones-Russell also left campers with a powerful life lesson from her grandmother: “Life is about people, places, and things. Approach it with a rake and a shovel. Rake in the people, places, and things that are good and positive, and shovel out those that are bad and negative.”

Campers also learned about Youth Court resources, not only for youth involved in the justice system, but for all young people including the upcoming Resiliency Center, which will provide counseling and life skills classes for youth.
