The Wall Street Journal once recognized his style for its similarity to Edward Hopper’s—who likewise painted on Cape Ann—by stating that “Some of Mr. Arsenault’s paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper, just at a thousandth of the price.” Arsenault is known for his colorful and
dramatically-lit “frozen moment” scenes of Cape Ann and Cape Cod, along with road trips, neon signs and night, and landmarks like diners and drive-ins. His current work is exclusively made up of paintings depicting places in and around Cape Ann, focusing around Rockport and Gloucester.

With the holiday weekend behind us, I'm caught reflecting on how mid-October really seemed to mark the closure of "The Tourist Season" for my gallery business. That made for a bittersweet realization: the busyness—and business—was morphing into a slower, less productive period. A huge energetic shift. Yet balance is important, and this was an invitation you were wise to accept.

A few times a year, Sue and I make it back to Halibut Point State Park to walk around and appreciate all of the natural beauty there. So much beauty, even as I'm reminded that 100 years ago it was the site of stone workers doing very hard physical labor to make a living. Not far from the entrance is the overlook you see at left: a view of the quarry and beyond to the sea. It was this approximate perspective which led me to paint "Taken for Granite" (at right, 24" x 18", oil, private collection) in 2022.

Today I'm happy to share that the painting "Out Standing in Their Field" has been sold and will soon be headed to a town just outside of Philadelphia. At 48" x 36" it's one of my largest works ever, yet there's a perfect spot on the wall just waiting for it. Thank you very much, Mila!

It's the final day of the 42nd Annual Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show. I'll be there from 11:30-5 with my three latest originals and other 2026 paintings like "Pop Top" (24" x 24" oil, shown below). You'll also find a wide selection of archival ink (giclée) prints on paper and canvas, the new 2027 calendar, and a variety of individual blank notecards and boxed sets. Sue took this photo last evening of friend Rick Blue with me at the Gala opening the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show. He saved the day when I brought the wrong power strip and couldn't get enough juice for my USB checkout device. On with the show! In a week-and-a-half, Sue and I will be taking an overnight trip to the Green Mountain State, Vermont. Rumor has it that the fall foliage color is coming along quite nicely! Given how quickly things change, I hope they save some for our trip on the 18th! 🍁🍂

Spindrift, sea spray blown from waves, was abundant yesterday at Cape Hedge. Also, notice how the wave and cloud seem to echo each other in their shapes. It appeared as if the steady yet warm wind was working hard to sculpt the water, sky, and earth to its liking. it also tried to take our hats.
