Who really owns the Schooner Adventure?

Schooner Adventure is property of Gloucester Adventure Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit established when her former captain, Jim Sharp, retired her as a windjammer and gifted her to the City of Gloucester. The non-profit was formed to steward funds and spearhead Adventure's renovation into the National Historic Landmark she is today.

Having just celebrated her 100th birthday this month, we are proud to share Adventure's prowess and history with the community who built her. Maritime Gloucester

'Schooner Adventure celebrates centennial mark with all day event'

By Bobby Grady | Gloucester Daily Times

EXCERPT BELOW:

"Adventure’s story dates back to Sept. 16, 1926, when she first launched into the Essex River. The 121-foot vessel began as a Grand Banks dory-fishing schooner, served as a windjammer and is used today as a floating classroom and community vessel stewarded by the Schooner Adventure nonprofit.

The vessel has also been recognized as a National Historic Landmark. State Sen. Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, presented Schooner Adventure staff with a resolution from the Senate recognizing the vessel’s importance."

What an incredible centennial season we've had.

2026 has been one of our most exciting years yet. We ran dozens of public sails, participated in Sail Boston 2026, held our third annual Girls on Adventure program, and most importantly, celebrated Adventure's 100th birthday this month.

Thank you to everyone who came aboard, joined us on the pier, supported Adventure, shared her story, and helped us celebrate 100 years on the water.

The celebration may be winding down, but Adventure is just getting started. Stay tuned for what's next!

Happy World Maritime Day!

Today, we celebrate Gloucester's deep-rooted maritime heritage and the generations of fishermen who helped feed a growing nation.

During her fishing years, Schooner Adventure was part of that story. Built in 1926 for the Grand Banks fishery, she carried generations of fishermen to the fishing grounds and brought their catch home to Gloucester.

Today, Adventure carries a different kind of cargo: history, knowledge, and stories. Through her preservation and educational mission, we have the opportunity to remember the people who made their living on the water and help future generations understand the vital role maritime communities have played in our nation's history. It's our honor to ensure that history lives on. Maritime Gloucester

WHY ADVENTURE?

Because Schooner Adventure isn't just a boat.

She is a working piece of Cape Ann history.

She was launched in Gloucester in 1926, spent decades fishing the North Atlantic, became a legendary windjammer, and was eventually saved by a community that believed she was worth preserving.

Today, Adventure is a National Historic Landmark, an educational vessel, and a place where people can experience Gloucester’s maritime heritage firsthand.

And in 2026 — her 100th year — we're thinking about the next century.

A vote for Schooner Adventure through BankGloucester’s Banking for the Community program helps support the work of keeping this historic vessel active, accessible, and here for the community.

Voting is open through September 30. VOTE HERE: https://form.jotform.com/262006449975061

If Adventure has been part of your story, your family’s story, or Cape Ann’s story, please consider voting for her. One hundred years down. The next hundred to go.
