UPCOMING WORKSHOP!!
Sign Up for Loren Doucette's Poetic Landscape Workshop for Saturday, September 26 from 10AM - 4PM at North Shore Arts!

Sign Up Now at : nsarts.org/2026-loren-doucette-workshop

Weather permitting, in this workshop you will be painting outdoors at the NSAA. You will be introduced to a number of artists who take liberties with the landscape followed by a “Search Method” introduction of drawing from observation explaining how forms relate to one another. Loren will discuss the idea of “letting the landscape work for you” rather than copying it directly. You will be encouraged to use the colors and forms you see but also to depart from them as you invent your own. You will learn how to expand your color mixing and will be encouraged toward freedom, fun and exploration.

Artist Info:
A nationally recognized artist, Susan Lynn’s paintings have been described as poetic, lyrical, luminous and serene. Capturing a sense of light and atmosphere is a persistent theme of her work. Whether focusing on landscape or still-life, she believes that nature is a subject that speaks to the viewer in a visceral way, tapping into universal memories, emotions and the human connection to the world around us. After a 15-year career in the field of architectural illustration, fine art painting has been her primary focus for many years. She found the world of architectural illustration to be a fantastic training ground for a realist painter, demanding a thorough knowledge of perspective and a constant study of light, shadow, and color. Susan creates her paintings both in studio and “en plein air”, painting outdoors from life. Although watercolor remains her favored medium, she recently began adding oils and acrylics to her repertoire, expanding the creative possibilities of her work. In 2019, Susan opened her own gallery, the Susan Lynn Gallery & Studio, located at 79 Main Street in Rockport, Massachusetts. Sign up for her newsletter and enjoy updates on her latest work and insights into her painting process. You may also follow Susan’s work online on Facebook (Susan Lynn Studio) and Instagram ().

“Exercises for the Quiet Eye” (EQE) is a guided looking technique developed at the The Corcoran in Washington, DC. It encourages close observation, patient reflection. It helps quell the rush to judgement, to understand prematurely or to determine a set interpretation of what we see before experiencing it fully. EQE’s aim is to foster lasting, independent habits of looking in each viewer.

[Aug 22] Enjoy this stand-alone introduction to innovative methods of looking at art, with a special focus on Jeff Weavers’ Solo Show. Funded by: Gloucester Cultural Council.

[Sept series] This mini-course explores ways viewers can shape their own art experiences through a variety of short activities that accentuate different ways of seeing. A loosely structured opportunity to go more deeply into “Exercises for the Quiet Eye.” All three sessions are recommended, but participants for 1 or 2 are welcome.

Artist Statement:

Unsuccessful prints, drawings, and paintings are the foundation for creating new art. The transition from old to new is expressed with tearing, cutting, and folding techniques. The process of paper manipulation alone is not enough, and new media is introduced allowing for various textures, edges, and shapes to enter the picture. Spray paint, oil paint, acrylic paint, and etching ink are a few materials used. The layers of multiple media build a visual history, which enhances a believable spacial environment. This enables my artwork to evolve and become its own abstract reality.
