What did falconry look like in the medieval world, and what has it become today? 🦅

We recently got an up-close look during Falconry and the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation, where WINGMASTERS introduced us to the history of falconry, the role birds of prey have played over time, and the incredible work that goes into caring for local raptors and the non-releasable birds in their care.

We also learned that owls aren’t quite as wise as their reputation suggests.

Thank you to Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks of WINGMASTERS for sharing their knowledge, their passion, and the birds under their care, with us.

Did you know the Great Hall was designed to accommodate the sounds of Hammond's pipe organ while also creating an ideal space for recordings? It's true! On your next visit, take a closer look at the Great Hall's wavy plaster walls, which were designed to help control the reverberation of sound.

That's just one of the countless details that make Hammond Castle Museum a truly day trip-worthy experience.

Imagine looking up at something people were admiring more than 500 years ago!

The Lübeck Screen in the Great Hall is more than elaborate decoration. This hand-carved, gilded wooden balustrade includes a 15th-century Gothic organ screen from the Marienkirche in Lübeck, Germany.

It’s a remarkable connection to centuries of art, music and craftsmanship, and the details are even more impressive in person.

Some of the Museum’s most important work happens behind the scenes.

Through partnerships with local colleges, Hammond Castle Museum serves as a museum studies training site, giving interns hands-on experience preserving, organizing, and digitizing historic collections.

Working alongside Director of Collections Beth Welin, these students are helping make our archives more accessible while gaining the skills to become the next generation of museum professionals.

The program has been incredibly successful, and Beth’s leadership, including founding the internship program, was recently recognized with a 2026 Massachusetts History Alliance Star Award.

We’re proud to preserve history while helping prepare the people who will care for it next!

The North Shore’s own Renaissance Faire returns to Hammond Castle Museum on Saturday, November 7 & Sunday, November 8, 2026! 🏰✨

Expect knights, artisans, performers, music, merriment, and living history as the Castle transforms into one of New England’s most magical Renaissance celebrations. From high-energy armored combat demonstrations and Medieval arms and armor presentations to wandering performers, enchanting entertainers, hands-on kids’ crafts, and plenty of pageantry, there is something for every prince, princess, knight, rogue, fairy, and friend.
