What a fun feature about Cranbrook Art Museum and Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research on PBS NewsHour! https://t.e2ma.net/click/1793ng/dhp3gdb/dt2lp7

The average adult sits six and a half hours a day, but sometimes, a chair is much more. A new exhibition examines a school renowned for its influence on art and design – the very ‘look’ of post-war America. Jeffrey Brown reports for our arts and culture series, “CANVAS.”

The Era of the Visionary Museum Director Is Over ... or It Should Be

“We must ask, ‘How do we want to begin again?’ And we must have the courage to leave behind old habits that were comfortable for many, but unwelcoming and antagonistic for many others.”

We directors must leave the institution, and the field, better than we found it.

June 1 - 7 is Museum Survival Week! (www.museumsurvivalkit.com) What is Museum Survival Week? From June 1-7, museums and their members and patrons nationwide are invited to share “survival skills” inspired by museum content or collections on social media. Institutions and individuals will build this collaborative virtual survival kit of tips, tricks and tools rooted in our shared heritage by posting a video, Instagram or Facebook post, or blog entry tagged with #MuseumSurvivalKit. Together, these posts will demonstrate the incredible range of creative ways our ancestors (and contemporary communities) have found to care for themselves and others during tough times. Why #MuseumSurvivalKit? Our communities are facing lots of challenges during COVID-19. Our ancestors faced hard times, too. We are inspired by the idea that museums can help people look to the past--and to their own communities-- for ways to face present-day struggles: #MuseumSurvivalKit was born. Museums are not just storytelling organizations - they’re places with relevant content that we need right now. Museums - and their sister organizations like historic sites, libraries, archives, nature and science centers, arts centers and community spaces - are essential institutions that preserve and sustain the knowledge our ancestors developed when facing hard times past. They keep and share skills that can help us all cope with the challenges we face today, and find joy in acts of collective creativity, survival and resilience. Who can participate? If you have historic or community-based knowledge to share, you can participate. The project was initially conceived to highlight museums as culture bearers that preserve and share useful skills - but we know that these skills are found not only in history museums, but in art museums, science centers, archives, libraries, community centers, arts organizations, and in individuals themselves. If you have something to share that fits the project guidelines, please participate! How does it work? 1. Sign up to participate. We’d like to coordinate efforts using the Google Form below. Let us know how to reach you, what you’d like to share, and what day you will post. (If the form is a barrier, participate without utilizing it.) 2. Identify a skill. Mine your own or your favorite museum, your skills and your memory to find tips, tricks, and tools rooted in your unique content. Surviving isn’t just about food, water, and shelter - it can also be about lifting the spirit, bringing comfort, and creative entertainment. If it helps you get through a tough day, it’s a survival skill! Need ideas? Check out our Ideas page. 3. Design your skill. Download our Graphics Package and use it to build a story shareable on social media. This could be a 1-3 minute video, an Instagram story or post, a Twitter thread, or a Facebook post. Using the graphic elements helps give #MuseumSurvivalKit a unified presence and wider impact. 4. Post and share to your social media channels using the hashtag #MuseumSurvivalKit. Also, be sure to find and share other #MuseumSurvivalKit posts to help it reach a wide audience! What if I Can’t Do This by June 7? That’s OK! Post when you can. Do you have to be working in a museum to participate? You don’t need to be connected with an institution to participate. How Do I Register to Participate? Please visit this Google Form to sign up. http://tiny.cc/m2vipz
