Today we’re honoring the day Thomas C. C**t Jr. became Director of the Dayton Art Institute. 🖼️

Leading the museum from 1957–1975, C**t helped shape the DAI into the institution we know today. Before coming to Dayton, he became the first director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1935 and later served as an aviator in the Pacific during World War II.

During his tenure, the museum’s collection grew through many significant acquisitions, especially in European art. The museum also welcomed the donation of Edward Hopper’s High Noon, installed air conditioning (once considered just a “fad” by E.B. Green), and saw beloved traditions like Art Ball and the very first Oktoberfest come to life through the Associate Board.
