On this day...

272 years ago, May 24th, 1754, Colonel George Washington and his 150-man contingent of the Virginia Regiment will arrive at the Great Meadows. After a month of building a road through the Appalachian wilderness, the Great Meadows will be seen as a grassy oasis in a sea of trees.

This natural meadow will be seen as a natural stopping point for Washington’s command that will allow their cattle and horses to graze. Bisecting the Great Meadow is two streams (Indian Run and Great Meadow Run), which will provide fresh water for both men and animals.

Grateful for Maryland Historical Trust Support!

We’re honored to share that the Allegany Museum has been awarded a grant through the Maryland Historical Trust’s Museum Assistance Program (MAP) — the first round of awards since 2011!

We’re deeply thankful to the Maryland Historical Trust for recognizing the importance of preserving and sharing Maryland’s rich history.

Your continued support helps us keep Cumberland’s stories alive — from our local heritage to the broader tapestry of Maryland’s past!
