Come to the Montgomery Museum on November 5 from 5:30 - 7:00PM for an evening of early American history!

Join amateur historian Jef Graham and discover how 250,000 people, often referred to as “Scots Irish,” formed the largest movement of British people to the American Backcountry (now Appalachia) between 1720-1776.

Fact will be followed by (historical) fiction - enjoy a stage reading from Proclamation Theatre! In 1774, William Preston promoted Daniel Boone to Captain in the Fincastle County Virginia Militia. Hear a depiction of events as Boone risked everything to open up the Kentucky frontier.

Photographing History - Mabry Mill

Historic photographs help us preserve the places and traditions that tell the story of our region. This photograph of Mabry Mill along the Blue Ridge Parkway captures a familiar Southwest Virginia landmark with deep ties to Appalachian heritage. Built by Ed Mabry in 1905, the mill remains a beloved piece of our region's history. Many may also remember the restaurant that once welcomed visitors with hearty breakfasts and its famous buckwheat pancakes!

Explore Montgomery County’s Story! Our Montgomery 250 exhibit fills the entire lower level of the Montgomery Museum of Art & History and is the largest exhibit we’ve ever created!

As part of Virginia’s 250th commemoration, the exhibit explores the history and development of Montgomery County and the surrounding Appalachian region beginning with the Revolutionary era and the formation of the county in 1776. The exhibit will be on display through the beginning of next year, so there’s still plenty of time to come out and experience it!

From early settlement and frontier life to railroads, agriculture and mining, the exhibit explores the people, places, and industries that shaped our community. Visitors can explore historical photographs and maps, historic artifacts, interactive displays, videos and audio recordings while learning about the cultural contributions of Indigenous peoples, African American communities, and European settlers.

Plan a visit and explore Montgomery County’s story as we celebrate the 250th commemoration of Virginia!

Have you gotten your ticket yet? Our second Sounds of Appalachia concert featuring the Jack Hinshelwood Trio and opening act The Mustard Cutters will be held on Thursday, November 19th at 7:00pm!
