Did you know this fun fact about alpacas?🦙🦙🦙

Weaving was not widely practiced in colonial America, as imported textiles from England, China, and India were often cheaper than locally produced goods. However, British taxation of imported textiles sparked protests and boycotts. In response, some colonists began weaving their own textiles as an act of self-sufficiency and resistance to “taxation without representation.”

Col. William Preston grew and sold h**p that enslaved people raised here at Smithfield. Colonial Americans learned from Native Americans how to fashion clothing, nets, and rope from the durable w**d.

Something new is happening on Historic Smithfield’s social media… We're putting some of our younger volunteers in charge!

Meet Christine, one of our fantastic volunteers and the person behind our upcoming social media takeover. We’re excited for her fresh take because, let’s be honest, our young volunteers are a little more with it when it comes to the latest trends, videos, and ways to make history fun online.

Over the coming weeks, you’ll be seeing videos and other content spearheaded by Christine and our young volunteers, with plenty of help from the rest of our amazing volunteers and staff. Expect history, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and maybe a trend or two that we’re still trying to figure out.

We’re excited to let our volunteers bring their own creativity and perspectives to the story of Historic Smithfield and we hope you’ll have as much fun watching as we do making them!

Are you following Calfee Community & Cultural Center? If not, you’re missing out an an important part of our region’s history!

We would like to extend a very special thank you to Jenny Nehrt and Historic Smithfield for their generous support as we finalize the designs for our upcoming Quiet Courage exhibit. Jenny has spent many hours working alongside the Calfee team to adapt our design and help us tell the remarkable story of Black education in Pulaski County.

Partnerships like this make it possible for us to preserve, interpret, and share this important history with our community. Thank you, Jenny and Historic Smithfield, for being part of this work!

Looking for historical fun this weekend? Head over to the Mary Draper Ingles Festival at Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery! Stop by our booth to say hi!

Celebrate America’s 250th at the Mary Draper Ingles Festival July 24-26 in Radford and at nearby sites. Visitors will hear outstanding writers, historians, and musicians who bring Virginia’s early frontier to life.

There is engaging content for everyone at the Mary Draper Ingles Festival, including our children visitors. On Saturday, there will be a special storytime at 10 am with Radford Public Library's Morgan Esterhuizen. There will be a petting zoo from 10 am to 1 pm. A giant cow Bounce House will also be part of the festivities.
